This study aimed to assess the use of medical record items in clinical research in one large academic medical center in Taiwan. ⋯ More than one-third of publications utilized medical records, but the patient numbers and record items in use were relatively limited. In the era of digitalization and big data analytics, the potential of medical records in research deserves attention. Investment in establishing a more accessible database of medical records to access nonstructural, descriptive medical records could be considered.

Uremic pericarditis and pericardial effusion are possible complications among patients with end-stage renal disease. The accumulation of toxic metabolites may contribute to the pathogenesis of uremic pericarditis. Bleeding diathesis in peritoneal dialysis patients raises the risk of hemorrhagic pericardial tamponade, which is a fatal complication of peritoneal dialysis. ⋯ There was a significant improvement both in his clinical condition and in the echocardiogram images after the procedure. Hemorrhagic pericardial tamponade occurs in uremic patients but is rarely seen in those undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Early diagnosis, immediate surgical drainage, and regular follow-up with echocardiography are crucial to achieve better prognoses in future similar clinical scenarios.

To date, plastic surgeons do not have an objective method of measuring facial symmetry for zygomatic bone fracture management. Based on clinical practice, the authors utilized a 3-dimensional (3D) model to propose the symmetry index from the anterior view (SIAV) and the symmetry index from inferior view (SIIV). This study aimed to assess the application of these 2 indices. ⋯ The SIAV and SIIV based on clinical practice could numerically assess the symmetry of the malar mound.

A recent study suggested to develop and implement more interacted material for preprocedural education to decrease patients' anxiety about the atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. This study compared the effectiveness of using either newly developed virtual reality (VR) materials (VR group) or paper-based materials (paper group) on giving AF preprocedural education. ⋯ Interactive VR-based materials are superior to the paper-based materials to provide patients immerse and imagine the journey and detail knowledge of AF catheter ablation before the procedure and better prepared patients for the procedure.

This study was conducted to provide an overview of anesthesia services in Taiwan from 2001 to 2010. ⋯ The use of anesthesia services in Taiwan has increased over the years. The relationships of age with anesthesia volume and cost were found to follow an inverse U-shaped pattern. Elderly people used anesthesia services more frequently. The planning of geriatric anesthesia services deserves attention, especially in continually aging societies such as Taiwan.
