Calcimimetics is a new drug for lowering serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium and phosphate in patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) on long-term dialysis. It became available on market in 2006. The impact of calcimimetics on the treatment by parathyroidectomy (PTx) was reviewed from the surgeons' point of view. ⋯ A consensus between nephrologists and surgeons about propitious timing for PTx is necessary. Future prospect on the surgical treatment of renal HPT is proposed. Supplemental figure; http://links.lww.com/ASAIO/A782.

Multigene assays, such as MammaPrint and BluePrint, provide additional information other than conventional immunohistochemistry (IHC) to help making decision of treatment. This study aims to compare the clinical correlation between molecular subtyping (MS) versus surrogate pathological subtyping (PS). ⋯ The MS results restratify the subtypes of hormone receptor positive breast cancer and dominate decision-making of adjuvant therapy. The role of surrogate biomarkers as an alternative tool needs further elucidation. The treatment outcome in different subtypes categorized by MS or PS will be the interesting focus of research.

The Diabetes Shared Care Program (DSCP) is an integrated care model in Taiwan to improve the care quality of patients with diabetes. Socioeconomic status (SES) is one of the important factors affecting health, and it is confirmed as a predictor of various diseases and deaths. This study aimed to determine the relationship between survival rate and SES among patients who participated in the DSCP. ⋯ In this study, we found that low individual SES, but not neighborhood SES, was associated with an increased mortality rate among DSCP participants.

Candidemia is a life-threatening condition; however, the predictive markers for candidemia and mortality are inadequate in cirrhotic patients. This study was conducted to propose candidate predictors for the occurrence of candidemia and 30-day mortality in hospitalized cirrhotic patients with bloodstream infection (BSI) and review the related literature. ⋯ Candidemia had low incidence but high mortality in hospitalized cirrhotic patients with BSI. New predictors were proposed for the occurrence of candidemia and 30-day mortality in these patients.
