Prior to 2015, Zika Virus (ZIKV) outbreaks had occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Although a causal relationship between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly is strongly suspected, such a connection has not yet been scientifically proven. In May 2015, the outbreak of ZIKV infection in Brazil led to reports of syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes; the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed ZIKV infection in Brazil. ⋯ The laboratory diagnosis can be performed by using reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on serum, viral nucleic acid and virus-specific immunoglobulin M. There is currently no vaccine and antiviral treatment available for ZIKV infection, and the only way to prevent congenital ZIKV infection is to prevent maternal infection. In February 2016, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) activated ZIKV as a Category V Notifiable Infectious Disease similar to Ebola virus disease and MERS.

Overview of the health care system in Hong Kong and its referential significance to mainland China.
Hong Kong's health system was established within the framework of a perfect market-oriented economic matrix, where there are wide-ranging social security and medical service systems. There are many differences in the economic foundations, social systems, and ideologies between Hong Kong and mainland China, therefore, it would probably be entirely impossible to copy Hong Kong's health care system mode. However, under the framework of one country, two systems, the referential significance of relevant concepts of Hong Kong's medical service system to mainland China cannot be ignored, and merits further study.

In implant therapy, the adequate state of peri-implant tissue health and soft-tissue aesthetics is the essential criterion of restorative success. The need for keratinized mucosa for the maintenance of peri-implant health and soft-tissue integration remains a debated issue. The aim of this paper is to provide a narrative review of the current literature concerning the significance of keratinized mucosa with respect to the clinical parameters of monitoring oral hygiene practice and tissue status. ⋯ The evidence related to the effect of keratinized mucosa on the changes of attachment or bone levels is limited, and conclusions could not be drawn at present. Further, this review found that a band of keratinized mucosa was not absolutely necessary for the maintenance of peri-implant tissue, whereas lack of adequate keratinized mucosa around the implant might impede proper oral hygiene performance and compromise the aesthetic results. In conclusion, because there is a wide variety of clinical features in patients pursuing implant therapy, individual consideration of treatment strategies for the patient with minimal keratinized mucosa is recommended.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health care issue resulting from hyperglycemia-mediated life-threatening complications. Although the use of glucose-lowering agents is routinely practiced, high dependence on medication leads to poor quality of life for DM patients. While it is still not feasible to precisely determine the critical timing when DM is truly established, perhaps the best way to reduce DM-associated mortality is to prevent it. ⋯ Recently discovered small noncoding molecules, microRNAs (miRs), in body fluid seem promising to be utilized as a biomarker to monitor DM initiation and progression, as it is believed that expression of circulating miRs reflects disease pathology. Current DM-related miRs were often referred to miRs differentially expressed in insulin target organs (liver, muscle, and adipose tissues) or circulating blood (peripheral blood) in diabetic patients compared to their control counterparts, although these miRs could merely be resultant nucleotides from DM-induced organ impairment instead of the indicators of onset/progression of DM. In the current review, studies showing circulating miRs associated with type 2 DM and its complications are summarized, and future scope of using miRs as biomarkers for disease prognosis/diagnosis is also emphasized.

Preventive and therapeutic role of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in hepatocellular carcinoma.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide. The clinical management of HCC remains a substantial challenge. Although surgical resection of tumor tissues seems promising, a high recurrence and/or metastasis rate accounting for disease-related death has led to an urgent need for improved postsurgical preventive/therapeutic clinical intervention. ⋯ Because of their enhanced preventive/therapeutic effects, traditional Chinese herbal medicine (CHM)-derived compounds are considered suitable agents for HCC treatment. The CHM-derived compounds also possess multilevel, multitarget, and coordinated intervention effects, making them ideal candidates for inhibition of tumor progression and HCC metastasis. This article reviews the anticancer activity of various CHMs with the hope of providing a better understanding of how to best use CHM for HCC treatment.
