Clinical and prognostic characteristics of 573 cases of primary Sjögren's syndrome.
Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is one of the autoimmune diseases with high incidence. There were several clinical investigations in Caucasian but seldom in Chinese. The aim of this study was to compare the difference of clinical manifestations, immunological features and prognosis of pSS between Caucasian and Chinese pSS patients. ⋯ Chinese pSS differs significantly from the non-Chinese cases in terms of the age of onset, systemic involvement, autoantibodies and proportional mortality rate. Lung and liver damage were found to be the highest risk factors of the disease prognosis.

Comparison of the clinical accuracy of cervical (C2-C7) pedicle screw insertion assisted by fluoroscopy, computed tomography-based navigation, and intraoperative three-dimensional C-arm navigation.
The complicated anatomy of the cervical spine and the variation among pedicles reduces the accuracy and increases the risk of neurovascular complications associated with screw implantation in this region. In this study, we compared the accuracy of cervical (C2-C7) pedicle screw fixation assisted by X-ray fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT)-based navigation, or intraoperative three-dimensional (3D) C-arm navigation. ⋯ CT-based and intraoperative 3D C-arm navigation were similarly accurate, and were both significantly more accurate than C-arm fluoroscopy for guiding cervical pedicle screw fixation. They were able to accurately guide the angle and depth of screw placement using visual 3D images. These two techniques are therefore preferable for high-risk cervical pedicle screw fixation. The ease and convenience of intraoperative 3D C-arm navigation suggests that it may replace virtual-fluoroscopy and CT-based navigation systems in future clinical applications.

Variation in STAT4 is associated with systemic lupus erythematosus in Chinese Northern Han population.
Recent studies have identified signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (STAT4) as a susceptibility gene for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in different populations. In order to examine whether the allele distribution of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in gene STAT4 rs7574865 in patients with SLE is different from those of healthy controls in Chinese Northern Han population, we investigated whether the variants of STAT4 rs7574865 were associated with any specific clinical features of SLE. ⋯ The SNP rs7574865 in STAT4 is strongly associated with risk of SLE in the Chinese Northern Han population. The TT genotype and T allele in STAT4 rs7574869 are susceptibility factors for SLE, especially for male SLE patients.

Correlation of estrogen receptor alpha gene polymorphisms and bone mineral density in Chinese women with chronic periodontitis.
Periodontitis and osteoporosis are one of the frequently encountered diseases in post-menopausal women. Estrogen receptors (ERs) regulated bone metabolism. To investigate the possible effect of ER-alpha (α) gene polymorphisms on bone mineral density (BMD) in pre- and post- menopausal Chinese women with chronic periodontitis (CP), we provided sufficient quantitative information concerning the correlation between ER gene polymorphisms and BMD in periodontitis. ⋯ ER-α gene polymorphisms may be a susceptible indicator for BMD variation of lumbar spine L2–L4 and Ward in Chinese pre- and post-menopausal women patients with CP.

Efficacy and clinical/molecular predictors of erlotinib monotherapy for Chinese advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
A retrospective analysis of clinical data were conducted reviewing patients who were given erlotinib at Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital from May 2005 to December 2009. Relationships between clinical factors, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mRNA expression, EGFR gene mutations, KRAS gene mutations and clinical outcomes were investigated in Chinese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ Erlotinib was safe and effective in treating Chinese patients with advanced NSCLC. The PFS of patients who had a skin rash, highly differentiated tumors, or EGFR exon 19/21 mutations was significantly longer.
