Association of farnesyl diphosphate synthase polymorphisms and response to alendronate treatment in Chinese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
Genetic factors are important in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, but less is known about the genetic determinants of osteoporosis treatment. We aimed to explore the association between the gene polymorphisms of key enzyme farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS) in mevalonate signaling pathway of osteoclast and response to alendronate therapy in osteoporotic postmenopausal women in China. ⋯ FDPS gene was probably a candidate gene to predict femoral neck BMD at baseline. FDPS gene alleles could predict change percentage of ALP after treatment of alendronate, but possibly had no significant relationship with the responsiveness of BMD to alendronate therapy.

Ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition arthroplasty for first carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis.
Ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI) is the most commonly performed surgical procedure for first carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to examine the radiographic and clinical outcomes of LRTI arthroplasty and document the clinical results based on metacarpal subsidence. ⋯ Ligament reconstruction tendon interposition arthroplasty resulted in excellent relief of pain and increase in range of motion. However, LRTI cannot maintain the arthroplasty space. Compared with the preoperative radiographs, the metacarpal subsided more than 50%. The amount of first metacarpal subsidence has no bearing on the results.

Genetic analysis of a congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus pedigree.
As an X-linked recessive way, arginine vasopressin receptor 2 (AVPR2) gene mutation resulted in a hereditary disease - congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (CNDI). We found a suspect clinical CNDI pedigree. In order to identify the genetic etiology, we performed the genetic analysis. ⋯ The AVPR2 gene R337X mutation was also a genetic etiology of CNDI patients in the mainland of China.

Association of polymorphisms in the vascular endothelial growth factor gene and its serum levels with diabetic retinopathy in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a major mediator of angiogenesis, and plays a key role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). This study was designed to identify the possible role of VEGF gene polymorphisms in the development of DR in type 2 diabetic patients in Chinese and clarify the relationship between VEGF serum levels and the risk of DR. ⋯ The data did not suggest significant association between the VEGF polymorphisms and DR risk under stringent Bonferroni's correction. However, our study indicated that DR patients have higher VEGF levels than diabetic patients without retinopathy, and -2578A/C (rs699947) and +405C/G (rs2010963) may be important factors in determining serum VEGF levels.

Are failures of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction associated with steep posterior tibial slopes? A case control study.
Recently, increasing number of literature has identified the posterior tibial slope (PTS) as one of the risk factors of primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. However, few studies concerning the association between failure of ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and PTS have been published. The objective of this study was to explore the association between the failure of ACLR and PTS at a minimum of two years follow-up. ⋯ Both medial and lateral PTS were significantly steeper in failures of ACLR than the control group. Medial or lateral PTS ≥5° was a new risk factor of ACLR failure.
