Spanish-speaking patients' satisfaction with clinical pharmacists' communication skills and demonstration of cultural sensitivity.
OBJECTIVE To assess Spanish-speaking patients' satisfaction with their clinical pharmacists' communication skills and demonstration of cultural sensitivity, while controlling for patients' sociodemographic, clinical, and communication factors, as well as pharmacist factors, and to identify clinical pharmacists' cultural factors that are important to Spanish-speaking patients. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Central Texas during August 2011 to May 2012. ⋯ Multiple linear regression analyses showed that cultural rapport was significantly related to satisfaction with pharmacists' communication skills and demonstration of cultural sensitivity. CONCLUSION Overall, patients were satisfied with pharmacists' communication skills and cultural sensitivity. Patient satisfaction initiatives that include cultural rapport should be developed for pharmacists who provide care to Spanish-speaking patients with limited English proficiency.

Physician-pharmacist collaborative care model for buprenorphine-maintained opioid-dependent patients.
To develop a physician-pharmacist collaborative practice for opioid-dependent patients designed to increase access to treatment, optimize patient care, reduce cost, minimize physician burden, and prevent diversion. ⋯ Physician and pharmacist collaboration optimized care of buprenorphine-maintained patients. Data from this pilot were used to develop a permanent physician-pharmacist program and to obtain approval for the first state-approved opioid use disorder drug therapy management protocol.

Value of pharmaceuticals: ensuring the future of research and development.
To analyze the current situation under which the pharmaceutical industry is criticized for the production of drugs with potential adverse effects, the high prices of medicines, and aggressive marketing practices, and to provide a proposal to rectify the situation. ⋯ Given appropriate legislative or other facilitatory actions, a royalty-based system for the marketing of generic products after the expiration of initial patents has the potential to promote innovation, provide for more thorough clinical studies, reduce prices, and share know-how. In addition, some of the issues related to the so-called aggressive pharmaceutical marketing practices would be resolved.

APhA 2011 REMS white paper: Summary of the REMS stakeholder meeting on improving program design and implementation.
To develop an improved risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS) system for maximizing effective and safe patient medication use while minimizing burden on the health care delivery system. ⋯ A workable REMS system will require effective patient interventions, standardized elements that limit barriers to implementation for both patients and providers, standardized yet flexible implementation strategies, use of existing technologies in practice settings, increased opportunities for provider input early in REMS design processes, improved communication strategies and awareness of program requirements, and viable provider compensation models needed to offset costs to implement and comply with REMS program requirements.
