The Ganoderma genus is known for its diverse use as a functional food and therapeutic agent. This fungus has over 428 species, with Ganoderma lucidum being the most studied. The Ganoderma species produce several secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds like polysaccharides, phenols, and triterpenes, which are largely responsible for their therapeutic properties. ⋯ Although its phytochemicals play a vital role in its therapeutic properties, identifying the therapeutic potentials of fungal-secreted metabolites for human health-promoting benefits is a challenging task. Identification of novel compounds with distinct chemical scaffolds and their mechanism of action could help suppress the spread of rising pathogens. Thus, this review provides an updated and comprehensive overview of the bioactive components in different Ganoderma species and the underlying physiological mechanisms.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a history of over 2000 years in treating infectious diseases, among which the clinical treatment of the common cold (colds) and influenza (flu) is the most widespread and well-established. It is difficult to tell the difference between a cold and the flu based on the symptoms alone. The flu vaccine protects against influenza, but there is no vaccine or specific medication to protect against the common cold. ⋯ However, more high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials should be conducted in the future for further verification. Pharmacological studies have shown that active ingredients extracted from TCM for treating colds have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immune-regulating, and anti-oxidative properties. We expect that this review will guide the optimization and rationalization of TCM clinical practice and scientific research in the treatment of colds.

Ganoderma is the dried fruiting bodiy of Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss.ex Fr.) Karst. or Ganoderma sinense Zhao, Xu et Zhang, belonging to the family Polyporaceae, which grows mainly in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. As a traditional Chinese medicine, Ganoderma has been used in China for more than 2000 years because of its medicinal properties, such as relieving cough and asthma, providing nourishment, and strengthening. ⋯ It is mainly used in clinical practice for the treatment of Diabetic Nephropathy and malignant tumors, with few side effects and high safety. This paper reviews the progress of research on its chemical composition, pharmacological effects, and clinical applications, with the goal of providing a basis for the better development and utilization of Ganoderma.

Developing effective and safe lipid-lowering drugs is highly urgent. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP) in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. First, a meta-analysis was performed to determine the lipid-lowering effects of GP. ⋯ Animal experiments revealed that GPE administration significantly reduced body weight, ameliorated high blood lipid levels, limited lipid deposition, and improved insulin resistance. Furthermore, GPE treatment markedly changed the intestinal microbiota structure and constitution of tryptophan metabolites. In conclusion, our results confirm the lipid-lowering effect of GP, which may be partly attributable to regulation of the intestinal microbiota and tryptophan metabolism.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complicated syndrome characterized by widespread chronic pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and other complications. There is currently no specific treatment available. No comprehensive surveys have been published to summarize the mechanism of acupuncture in FM management. ⋯ Furthermore, we discussed the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of FM, and reviewed acupuncture-related clinical studies. This review fills a previously unknown gap in knowledge of the mechanism of acupuncture for FM. Although there is growing evidence that acupuncture may be a promising therapy for treating symptoms in FM patients, further investigation is needed.
