Comparative StudyLiver Transplant Outcomes in a Newly Started Program.
Kazakhstan is experiencing a high demand for liver transplants. More than 1000 patients have end-stage liver disease in the country, and liver transplant is the only viable option for their treatment. ⋯ Our experience was insufficient to adequately assess morbidity and survival rates in patients for whom the longest follow-up was 25 months. However, no episodes of rejection were observed. Survival rates between living and deceased donor recipients were equivalent, although cadaveric-donor liver conditions were imperfect. This analysis demonstrates the necessity for timely diagnosis of surgical complications, which accounted for all mortality incidence in our series.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in Kidney Transplant Patients: Results From a Single Center.
We report the outcomes of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in patients who had undergone kidney transplant. ⋯ In kidney transplant patients, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is safe and able to provide substantial information for managing biliopancreatic diseases.

Late Intensive Care Unit Admission in Liver Transplant Recipients: 10-Year Experience.
We evaluated late intensive care unit admission in liver transplant recipients to identify incidences and causes of acute respiratory failure in the postoperative period and to compare these results with results in patients who did not have acute respiratory failure. ⋯ Acute respiratory failure developed in 59.5% of liver transplant recipients with late intensive care unit admission. The leading cause was pneumonia, with this group of patients having higher requirements for invasive mechanical ventilation and tracheotomy, longer stays in an intensive care unit, and higher mortality.

Case ReportsImplanting a Nonpulsatile Axial Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device as a Bridge to Transplant for Systemic Ventricular Failure After A Mustard Procedure.
Right (systemic) ventricular failure is well described after a Mustard procedure for transposition of the great arteries. Sixty-one percent of patients have been reported to show moderate-to-severe dysfunction of the systemic ventricle, 25 years after repair of transposition of the great arteries by a Mustard procedure. ⋯ Because of the special anatomic features of the right ventricle, the implantation procedure can be challenging. Here, we report the case of a patient who underwent a left ventricular assist device implant owing to severe heart failure, 36 years after undergoing a Mustard procedure.

Liver Transplant for Fulminant Hepatic Failure: A Single-Center Experience.
Acute liver failure is a life-threatening condition with sudden onset liver injury, decreased liver functions, hepatic encephalopathy, and coagulopathy in patients without preexisting liver disease. In this study, we sought to evaluate the results of liver transplant as a treatment for acute liver failure. ⋯ Living-donor liver transplants are an efficient and successful treatment for acute liver failure patients. In our center, we mostly consider and prefer living-donor liver transplants to deceased-donor liver transplant because of the paucity of organ donation, especially for pediatric patients. Considering acceptable postoperative complications, living-donor liver transplant is a lifesaving treatment for acute liver failure.
