Determinants of learning ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blockade.
Training in medical procedural skills is currently undergoing important change. We set out to identify those factors, perceived by trainers and trainees, to be important determinants of learning ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blockade (USgABPB). ⋯ Optimum training in USgABPB requires a formal structured training programme. We propose that these findings can be used to optimise the design of the curriculum, the training programme and assessment on performing the procedure.

The Hospital Exercise (Hospex) is the pre-deployment training programme used by the UK Defence Medical Services. It is one of only a handful of examples of macrosimulation existing worldwide. Hospex is innovative and engaging, and with the ever-growing evidence base supporting the use of simulation as a teaching tool, it is undoubtedly an invaluable resource from which other organisations could learn. ⋯ Evidence supporting the value of simulation as a teaching tool is ever growing. It is a transferrable resource that could be adapted to fit many briefs, including civilian health care training programmes.

Travelling educational workshops for clinical teachers: are they worthwhile?
The support of doctors who teach medical students in clinical settings is considered very important. In order to function as effectively as possible in their role as clinical teachers, these clinicians require educational support from faculty members. The most usual form that support takes is university staff offering face-to-face teaching on educational topics. ⋯ Whereas the subject matter of the workshops was of interest to those who attended, of equal importance was the opportunity the workshops created to interact with colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, the workshops were the catalyst for some clinicians to formally pursue their particular educational interests.
