Implementing the IMIST-AMBO tool for paramedic to trauma team handovers: a video review analysis.
Patient handover between paramedics and the trauma team is vulnerable to communication errors that may adversely affect patient care. This study assesses the feasibility of a handover tool, IMIST-AMBO (acronym of categories), implementation in the trauma bay and evaluates the degree to which it improves handover metrics. ⋯ The IMIST-AMBO tool reduced the frequency of interruptions, parallel conversations, and informal handovers during paramedic-trauma team handovers at our institution. The quality and amount of information communicated per handover improved, all with a decrease in handover duration. The IMIST-AMBO tool may be applied to other trauma centers across Canada, or more broadly on an international scale.

Our aim was to compare Health Link utilization in urban and rural Alberta by metrics relevant to the ED. ⋯ This study on Health Link describes how tele-health can often triage higher acuity patients to appropriately receive ED level care, which may be important for future development of health care and ED infrastructure.

Wide variations in emergency department (ED) syncope management exist. The Canadian Syncope Risk Score (CSRS) was developed to predict the probability of 30-day serious outcomes after ED disposition. Study objectives were to evaluate the acceptability of proposed CSRS practice recommendations among providers and patients, and identify barriers and facilitators for CSRS use to guide disposition decisions. ⋯ Our recommendations based on the study results were: discharge of low-risk patients with physician follow-up as needed; discharge of medium-risk patients with 15-day cardiac monitoring and brief hospitalization of high-risk patients with 15-day cardiac monitoring if discharged. Patients preferred less resource intensive options, in line with CSRS recommended care. Implementation should leverage identified facilitators (e.g., patient education) and address the barriers (e.g., monitor access) to improve ED syncope care.
