In 2016, based on recommendations of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Choosing Wisely Canada released transfusion guidelines for patients with Iron Deficiency Anemia. The goal of the present study was to examine the number of transfusions given in Calgary emergency departments (EDs) before and after the release of these guidelines. ⋯ Our data suggest that the number of potentially avoidable transfusions has not decreased since the release of Choosing Wisely Canada guidelines and local educational initiatives. This may be due to the fact that there is a pre-existing down trend in the number of transfusions provided.

The objective of this study was to explore Canadian emergency physicians' experiences, concerns, and perspectives during the first wave of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. ⋯ Canadian emergency physicians felt a strong sense of responsibility to care, while dealing with several ethical dilemmas. Clear communication strategies, measures to ensure safety, and appropriate emergency department setups facilitate pandemic care. Emergency physicians were not concerned about their own mental health, requiring further exploration.

Trauma resuscitation at dedicated trauma centers typically consist of ad-hoc teams performing critical tasks in a time-limited manner. This creates a high stakes environment apt or avoidable errors. Reporting of errors in trauma resuscitation is generally center-dependent and lacks common terminology. ⋯ Overall, our systematic review identified 39 unique error types in trauma resuscitation. Identifying these errors is imperative in developing systems for improvement of trauma care.
