Randomized Controlled Trial
An evaluation of a target-controlled infusion of propofol or propofol-alfentanil admixture for sedation in dogs.
To evaluate sedation quality and cardiorespiratory variables in dogs sedated using a target-controlled infusion of propofol or propofol-alfentanil admixture. ⋯ Addition of alfentanil to propofol target-controlled infusion did not confer cardiovascular benefits and, at the higher concentration, alfentanil increased the incidence of hypoxaemia.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Comparison of two passive warming devices for prevention of perioperative hypothermia in dogs.
To compare effects of two passive warming methods combined with a resistive heating mat on perioperative hypothermia in dogs. ⋯ This study supports previous data on prevalence of hypothermia during surgery. The combination of active and passive warming methods used in this study prevented the development of severe hypothermia, but there were no differences between treatment groups.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Efficacy and safety of cimicoxib in the control of perioperative pain in dogs.
To determine the efficacy and safety of cimicoxib (Cimalgex®; Vétoquinol SA) for the control of perioperative pain in dogs. ⋯ Cimicoxib had non-inferior efficacy and tolerability when compared to carprofen for the control of perioperative pain in dogs undergoing orthopaedic or soft tissue surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Effect of intraurethral administration of atracurium besylate in male cats with urethral plugs.
To evaluate the effect of intraurethral administration of atracurium besylate for urinary obstruction resulting from urethral plugs in male cats. ⋯ The results of this study indicate that in adult male cats with urethral plugs, urethral administration of atracurium besylate increases the proportion of animals in which the obstruction is removed at the first attempt and reduces the time required to remove the urethral plugs.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Intra-articular morphine, bupivacaine or no treatment for postoperative analgesia following unilateral elbow joint arthroscopy.
To compare intra-articular morphine or bupivacaine against no treatment following unilateral elbow joint arthroscopy using force plate analysis and pain scoring. ⋯ No benefit to intra-articular bupivacaine or morphine was detected using peak vertical force index from force plate analysis. Bupivacaine prevented increases in pain scores at both time points as did morphine at the 24-hour evaluation, compared to no treatment.
