Comprehensive analysis of gene-expression profile in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
To investigate the gene-expression profile of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and explore the possible therapeutic targets. ⋯ Our results may help further the understanding of the mechanisms of COPD. The identified DEGs, especially HLA-A, may serve as diagnosis markers for COPD.

Epidemiology, severity, and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the United Kingdom by GOLD 2013.
In 2013, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) updated the management strategy on COPD based on severity using a combined assessment of symptoms, degree of airflow limitation, and number of exacerbations. This study quantified prevalence and incidence of COPD in the United Kingdom and estimated disease severity by GOLD 2013 categories A/B (low risk) and C/D (high risk). ⋯ A third of COPD patients in the UK are considered high risk (GOLD 2013 categories C/D), and a third of patients are diagnosed for the first time at these severe stages. Given the progressive nature of the disease, results suggest that closer attention to respiratory symptoms for early detection, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of COPD in the UK is warranted.

Variants in multiple genes polymorphism association analysis of COPD in the Chinese Li population.
It is known that the contribution of risk alleles to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may vary between populations. Further, previous studies involving various ethnic groups have revealed associations between COPD and genetic polymorphisms in families with sequence similarity 13, member A (FAM13A), micro-RNA 2054 (MIR2054), SET domain containing protein 7 (SETD7), ring finger protein 150 (RNF150), hedgehog interacting protein (HHIP), and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). Our objective was to explore the association between these gene polymorphism and COPD in members of Chinese Li minority population. ⋯ Our results were the first time to reveal that SNPs from FAM13A (rs7671167), SETD7 (rs17050782), and a haplotype of VEGFA ("GGCGC") are potential susceptibility loci associated with increased COPD risk in Chinese Li minority population.

Prognostic factors for clinical failure of exacerbations in elderly outpatients with moderate-to-severe COPD.
Acute exacerbations represent a significant burden for patients with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Each exacerbation episode is frequently associated with a lengthy recovery and impaired quality of life. Prognostic factors for outpatients that may predict poor outcome after treatment with antibiotics recommended in the guidelines, are not fully understood. We aimed to identify pretherapy factors predictive of clinical failure in elderly (≥60 years old) outpatients with acute Anthonisen type 1 exacerbations.

Symptoms and impact of COPD assessed by an electronic diary in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD: psychometric results from the SHINE study.
Symptoms, particularly dyspnea, and activity limitation, have an impact on the health status and the ability to function normally in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ The eDiary was found to be valid, reliable, and responsive. The high correlations obtained between "shortness of breath" and the ratings of "bother" and "difficulty with activities" confirmed the relevance of this symptom in patients with COPD. Future studies will be required to explore further psychometric properties and their ability to differentiate between COPD treatments.
