The primary objective of the present systematic review was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. ⋯ The current evidence suggests that selected patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma may benefit from EPP, especially when combined with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant radiotherapy.

Consensus for EGFR mutation testing in non-small cell lung cancer: results from a European workshop.
Activating somatic mutations of the tyrosine kinase domain of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have recently been characterized in a subset of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients harboring these mutations in their tumors show excellent response to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs). The EGFR-TKI gefitinib has been approved in Europe for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC with activating mutations of the EGFR TK. Because EGFR mutation testing is not yet well established across Europe, biomarker-directed therapy only slowly emerges for the subset of NSCLC patients most likely to benefit: those with EGFR mutations. ⋯ The recommendations of the workshop will help implement EGFR mutation testing in Europe and, thereby, optimize the use of EGFR-TKIs in clinical practice.

Efficacy and safety of erlotinib in 1242 East/South-East Asian patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
Erlotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor that significantly increases survival for patients with previously treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors have been reported to be particularly effective in Asian patients and may have a distinct safety profile in this population compared with non-Asian patients. We report safety and efficacy data from a subpopulation of East/South-East (E/SE) Asian patients enrolled in a global, open-label, phase IV trial of erlotinib (Tarceva Lung Cancer Survival Treatment study). ⋯ Erlotinib is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for Asian patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Erlotinib in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: efficacy and safety findings of the global phase IV Tarceva Lung Cancer Survival Treatment study.
Erlotinib is a small molecule inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine-kinase activity that has been shown to significantly increase survival for patients with previously treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Here, we report safety and efficacy data from a large, global, open-label, phase IV trial of erlotinib (Tarceva Lung Cancer Survival Treatment). ⋯ These data confirm the favorable efficacy and safety profile of erlotinib in a large heterogeneous non-small cell lung cancer population.
