Aim: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide including Libya, where they account for 43% of all deaths. Sphingolipids are involved in the pathology of numerous diseases including cardiovascular diseases and are proposed as potential biomarkers of cardiovascular health that could be more effective compared to traditional clinical biomarkers. The aim of this study was to determine the sphingolipid content in the erythrocyte membrane of Libyan migrant and Serbian resident women. ⋯ Besides, in this group of apparently healthy women (n = 28), the sphingolipid content of erythrocytes was inversely related to the Omega-3 index (r =-0.492, p = 0.008) and directly linked to vitamin D status (r = 0.433, p = 0.021) and membrane cholesterol levels (r = 0.474, p = 0.011). Conclusion: The erythrocytes' sphingolipid levels should be measured/assessed as an additional biomarker of CV health, by applying a simple and routine method. Still, further investigation in a larger population-specific context is warranted.

We compared the self-reported ability to perform Kegel's exercises pre- and post-coital penetration in postpartum women. A cross-sectional design. Twenty-seven postpartum women with mild urinary incontinence were recruited. ⋯ Additionally, the outcomes of both measures showed no significant differences (p < 0.05) between women who reached orgasm and those who did not. Self-reported ability to perform Kegel's exercise immediately after coital penetration is reported to affect the appropriateness of its performance and effective outcomes. Thus, women should be discouraged from performing Kegel's exercises immediately post-coitus.

The current study aimed at analyzing the effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment accompanied by systemic antibiotics on salivary enzyme activities, periodontal parameters, and glycemic control in type-2 diabetic (T2D) patients with chronic periodontitis. ⋯ The increase in ALP, AST, and ALT activities reflects the impact of uncontrolled T2D on periodontal tissue alteration. The ALP activity increase was associated with the severity of periodontal status in diabetic patients. In comparison to non-surgical treatment alone, the adjunct use of systemic antibiotics improves periodontal state, enzyme activity, and glycemic control.

Introduction: Pituitary adenomas [PAs] constitute the third most common primary intracranial tumours, with a wide prevalence rate of 1% to 40%. Histologic (H & E) classification into acidophilic, basophilic and chromophobic adenomas have little clinical relevance but WHO recommended immunohistochemical subclassification has both therapeutic and prognostic significance. This immunohistochemical subclassification has not been done in our environment, making it imperative for us to evaluate the patterns in our environment. ⋯ Conclusion: PAs predominate amongst males, occurring mostly in the middle age groups in Southeastern Nigeria. Null cell adenoma is the commonest immunohistochemical subtype followed by PRL-secreting adenomas. Routine immunohistochemical characterization is required for accurate diagnosis and optimal patient care.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating disease that causes inflammation of the central nervous system, resulting in myelin damage and axon degeneration. Although the cause of MS remains unknown, various factors such as sex, latitude, sun exposure, serum vitamin D levels, Epstein Barr Virus infection, diet, microbiota and ethnicity are being studied for their potential roles in the development of the disease. ⋯ Therefore, the authors of this letter call for future studies to investigate the possible effects of the lunar cycle on MS activity and course, given evidence suggesting that the lunar cycle may affect sleep, fatigue, melatonin secretion, and mood state in humans. A deeper understanding of the chronobiology of MS could have practical implications for the development of chronotherapeutic strategies and the prevention or mitigation of MS relapses, potentially improving the quality of life of MS patients.
