The existing data have shown inconsistency about the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) and hypertension. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between RDW and newly diagnosed hypertension among adults in Sudan. This was a case-control study conducted in Northern Sudan from July to September 2022. ⋯ No association was found between RDW and newly diagnosed hypertension. No correlation was found between RDW and systolic (r = 0.045, P = 0.577) or diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.023, P = 0.772). In conclusion, no association in RDW was found between the patients with newly diagnosed hypertension and the healthy controls.

Several studies have reported increased glucose transporters (GLUT) expression in different cancer types, including breast cancer. The primary purpose of this study is to examine GLUT1 immunoexpression in breast cancer patients in Saudi Arabia and to determine its significance. The study examined the association between GLUT1 immunophenotype and the clinicopathological characteristics in breast cancer. ⋯ Positive estrogen and progesterone receptor results predicted lower GLUT1 immunoexpression (p < 0.0001 for both). Vascular invasion showed a significant association with GLUT1 immunoexpression (p = 0.045). Our findings support that GLUT1 immunohistochemistry can be used as a marker to determine the grade and hormonal receptor status in breast cancer.

Background: YKL-40, which is also known as Chitiniase 3-like 1, has been found to be up-regulated in many autoimmune diseases including asthma, systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus, etc. However, the relationship between serum levels of YKL-40 and one another common autoinmmue thyroid disease - Graves' disease (GD) has not yet been investigated. Objective: The current study was performed to investigate the correlation of serum YKL-40 levels with disease severity of initially diagnosed GD. ⋯ The positive correlations of YKL-40 in serum with the average superior thyroid artery velocity (STV) and thyroid tissue blood flow (TBF) were also observed. Conclusion: Our findings implicated that YKL-40 may be closely connected to the pathogenesis of GD. Increased YKL-40 levels are linked with disease severity of initially diagnosed GD.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with increased cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) even in patients with viral suppression by combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of CVDs in diseased individuals and the general population. Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an index of arterial stiffness that has been shown to predict target organ damage. ⋯ In a periurban hospital in Ghana, compared to non-HIV controls or cART-naïve HIV patients, cART-treated HIV patients had increased arterial stiffness measured as CAVI. CAVI is associated with metabolic abnormalities in non-HIV controls and cART-naïve HIV patients, but not in cART-treated HIV patients. Patients on TDF-based regimens had decreased CAVI.

Vitiligo is a multifactorial dermatosis with many etiological hypotheses that have been suggested for its occurrence. To our knowledge, few epidemiological studies are available on vitiligo induction factors and particularly on the role of exposure to chemicals in the onset of the disease has been found. Therefore, there is need to investigate the relationship between vitiligo and chemical exposures in order to understand this mysterious disease. ⋯ Our results suggest that chemical factors play a key role in the occurrence of vitiligo. Therefore, prevention of this dermatosis requires the identification of exposure to the incriminated chemicals in any patient followed for vitiligo. The earlier the diagnosis of 'chemical' or chemically aggravated vitiligo, the better the prognosis for this disease.
