Clothing thermal insulation and moisture vapour resistance are the two most important parameters in thermal environmental engineering, functional clothing design and end use of clothing ensembles. In this study, clothing thermal insulation and moisture vapour resistance of various types of clothing ensembles were measured using the walking-able sweating manikin, Walter, under various environmental conditions and walking speeds. ⋯ The model has been validated by using experimental data reported in the previous literature. It has shown that the new models have advantages and provide very accurate prediction.

Protection of the human respiratory system from exposure to nanoparticles is becoming an emerging issue in occupational hygiene. The potential adverse health effects associated with particles of approximately 1-100 nm are probably greater than submicron or micron-sized particles. The performance of two models of N95 half-facepiece-filtering respirators against nano-sized particles was evaluated at two inhalation flow rates, 30 and 85 l min(-1), following a manikin-based protocol. ⋯ The analysis revealed that the coefficient of variation of the penetration ranged from 0.10 to 0.54 for particles of 20-100 nm in diameter. The fraction of N95 respirators for which the performance test at 85 l min(-1) demonstrated excessive (>5%) penetration of nanoparticles was as high as 9/10. The test results obtained in a relatively small (0.096 m(3)) test chamber and in a large (24.3 m(3)) walk-in chamber were found essentially the same, thus, suggesting that laboratory-based evaluations have a good potential to adequately represent the respirator field performance.

A previously published cohort study of some 2670 employees of the North American sand industry, followed through 1994, provided strong evidence of a causal relationship between quartz exposure and death from both silicosis and lung cancer, after allowance for cigarette smoking and in the absence of known occupational carcinogens. Unexpectedly, a significant excess mortality from chronic non-malignant renal disease [observed 16; expected 7.6; standardized mortality ratio (SMR) 212] was also found, whereas deaths from renal cancer at this stage were close to expectation (observed 6; expected 5.2). ⋯ Our findings support a causal relationship between lung cancer and quartz exposure after allowance for cigarette smoking, in the absence of other known carcinogens, but failed to find similar evidence to explain the excess mortality from either chronic renal disease or kidney cancer.

We have recently developed a new personal sampling system for the real-time measurement of the protection provided by respirators against airborne dust and micro-organisms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance characteristics of the new sampling system in both laboratory and field conditions. ⋯ The newly designed personal sampling system efficiently detected the changes in protection factors in real time. The sampling flow was least affected by the inhalation flow when the sampling probe was imbedded on the respirator surface. Leak location, breathing patterns and exercises did affect the measurement of the protection factors obtained using an N95 filtering facepiece respirator. This can be attributed to the differences in the in-mask airflow dynamics contributed by the leak, filter material, sampling probe and inhalation. In future studies, it would be beneficial if the laboratory data could be integrated with the field database.
