In times of public health crises, medical residency program leaders are responsible to maintain the wellbeing of their residents and ensure uninterrupted training. COVID-19 caused significant impact on healthcare industry, depleting resources and manpower, which led to disruption to graduate medical education and residency training. Surgical residents were affected by the pandemic both by reduced operative opportunities in most training centers and inducing stress and concerns about safety and wellbeing among residents. ⋯ A holistic approach to the crisis was taken by the surgical residency program at the University of Illinois in Chicago, which addressed the issue from a resident, hospital, and public health standpoints. An operational strategy was introduced to optimize resident safety, maximize learning opportunities, support other non-surgical services, and promote online teaching and learning. This strategy is meant to serve as a dynamic reference for surgical residency programs and as an infrastructure for dealing with this and any upcoming healthcare crises in an efficient and resident-centered way.

The COVID-19 pandemic has engendered rapid and significant changes in patient care. Within the realm of surgical training, the resultant reduction in clinical exposure and case volume jeopardizes the quality of surgical training. Thus, our general surgery residency program proceeded to develop a tailored approach to training that mitigates impact on resident surgical education and optimizes clinical exposure without compromising safety. ⋯ We also highlighted critical COVID-19 literature in a weekly journal club to better understand this novel disease and its effect on surgical practice. The long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on resident education remains to be seen. Success may be achieved with commitment to constant needs assessment in the changing landscape of healthcare with the goal of producing a skilled surgical workforce for public service.

Downloadable audio files called podcasts have become popular within many areas of medical education. They can be a valuable supplement to traditional teaching methods. Medical educators may wish to incorporate podcasts into their curriculum and disseminate their work to a larger audience, but may not know how. ⋯ Medical education podcasts are a feasible way of disseminating educational materials to learners. We demonstrate sustainability and acceptance of this learning platform.

During the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, medical student involvement in direct patient care has been severely limited. Rotations mandatory not only for core curricula but also for informing decisions regarding specialty choice have been postponed during a critical window in the application cycle. Existing virtual rotations are largely observational or lack patient-facing components. ⋯ The authors will continue to develop the virtual surgical education methodology to further disseminate an interactive video-based medical student elective to other procedural specialties and institutions.

Established primary goals of general surgery subinternships are improvement in patient care and medical knowledge. However, the secondary gains such as obtaining recommendation letters and forming relationships are apparent but poorly defined. We sought the opinion of general surgery program directors (PDs) on the secondary purposes of subinternships. Our aim is to aide mentors and students to optimize the subinternship experience relative to the residency application process. ⋯ Our study suggests subinternships significantly impact a student's application to general surgery residency, clarifying a secondary role for these rotations. Subinternships are important for PDs to assess a student for ranking at their program. All students should pursue a letter of recommendation from subinternship faculty, when possible, as they can heavily influence the interview selection process. Away rotations should only be recommended for those students who need to strengthen their application.
