The Implementation of Communication Didactics for OB/GYN Residents on the Disclosure of Adverse Perioperative Events.
Communication skills are key components of the patient-physician relationship, yet are not routinely taught during residency. Institutional data demonstrates 75% of residents regularly encounter difficult communication scenarios. This study's objective is to develop and pilot a communications didactic/skills training program for Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) residents focused on the disclosure of adverse perioperative events. ⋯ A simulation-based formalized communication curriculum is effective for improving OB/GYN resident competence and skill levels in the disclosure of adverse perioperative events. Specific to adverse surgical complications, this curriculum appears feasible for implementation by other training programs. Further work is needed to identify the most beneficial timing and modality of these workshops.

This article examines the outcomes and impact of the AOA/ACGME Single Accreditation System (SAS) on 6 osteopathic surgical specialties, their program directors, residents, and students and how growth in osteopathic medical schools and students affects ACGME surgical training. ⋯ Participation in the SAS resulted in the loss of 41 surgical programs and marked reductions in training positions during a period of rapid osteopathic growth. Results from matching programs indicate that integration of DOs into established ACGME surgical residencies will be a slow, gradual process. The SAS succeeded in creating a unified standard for surgical training yet generated negative consequences on osteopathic surgical training.

To characterize strategies among OB-GYN residency programs to recruit underrepresented minorities in medicine, the relative effectiveness of these approaches, and the associated barriers to recruitment. ⋯ This systematic collation of URiM recruitment practices and perceptions of their effectiveness represents a toolbox of options for residency programs to consider in diversifying their workforce.

Surgery residents have few opportunities to work closely with attending surgeons or conduct research during clinical time. We hypothesized that a mentorship elective with a required research project would benefit residents' career development, including their personal connections with faculty mentors, and would help them build their academic portfolio. ⋯ A structured apprenticeship rotation allowed for closer relationships with attending surgeons and increased the scholarly achievement of PGY-4 surgery residents. We provide an example of how to incorporate a successful elective rotation into the surgery curriculum that strengthens resident career development and research productivity.

COVID-19 emerged as a global pandemic in 2020 and has affected millions of lives. Surgical training has also been significantly affected by this pandemic, but the exact effect remains unknown. We sought to perform a national survey of general surgery residents in the United States to assess the effect of COVID-19 on surgical resident training, education, and burnout. ⋯ COVID-19 has had significant impact on surgical training and education. One positive consequence of the pandemic is increased educational didactics. Online didactics should continue to be a part of surgical education in the post-COVID-19 era. Steps need to be taken to ensure that graduating surgical residents are adequately prepared for fellowship and independent practice despite the significantly decreased case volumes during this pandemic. Surgery training programs should focus on providing nontechnical clinical training and professional development during this time.
