The effect of epidural analgesia on maternal thermoregulation in labor.
Core and peripheral body temperatures were recorded in 24 parturients in labor with epidural analgesia and in 9 control parturients without analgesia. Shivering occurred in 11 (46%) of the women with epidural analgesia and in one parturient without analgesia. ⋯ Lumbar epidural analgesia may produce shivering and temporary temperature changes in the periphery. Core temperature is not significantly altered.

Maternal weight and weight gain in pregnancy and obstetric outcome.
We studied 3002 antenatal patients to assess the relationship between maternal weight at booking in the first trimester and the total weight gain during the pregnancy and the birth weight of infants, pregnancy complications and mode of delivery. We found if the weight of the mother in the first trimester was lower or higher by 20% as compared with the standard weight, and the weight gain was more than 16 kg and less than 2.5 kg, there was higher incidences of maternal and fetal morbidity (P less than 0.01).

Clinical TrialDysmenorrhea in women with intrauterine contraceptive device. Treatment with a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, naproxen.
Twenty-one women with intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) and severe dysmenorrhea were studied. All the women who participated in the study had primary dysmenorrhea of varying intensities. The insertion of IUCD increased the intensity of dysmenorrheic pain. ⋯ The effect of naproxen was significantly better than that of placebo (P less than 0.01). No severe side effects occurred during the treatment. There was no difference in the duration and amount of the menstrual blood flow during naproxen treatment compared to placebo according to the women's own judgement.

Case ReportsOvarian pregnancy in association with an intrauterine device.
Within a 1-year period, two cases of primary ovarian pregnancy associated with an intrauterine device (IUD) occurred in our institution. The clinical signs and symptoms were similar to those in any other ectopic pregnancy. ⋯ A review of the literature is presented summarizing the 53 cases reported until now. The association between IUD, ectopic pregnancy in general, and ovarian pregnancy in particular is discussed.

Maternal mortality at twelve teaching hospitals in Indonesia-an epidemiologic analysis.
Records on 36,062 maternity cases admitted to 12 teaching hospitals throughout Indonesia between 1977 and 1980 were analyzed. A hospital maternal mortality rate of 37.4/10,000 cases (39.0/10,000 live births) was derived that was about ten times higher than rates reported from developed countries in the early seventies. ⋯ It is postulated that if all pregnant women received adequate antenatal care, and if all women wanting no additional children were sterilized, maternal mortality would be cut in half. It is recommended that maternal health services in Indonesia be integrated into its successful family planning program.
