To review case reports of hepatic hematoma/rupture in women with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. ⋯ HELLP syndrome is a frequent diagnosis (92.8%) in hepatic hemorrhage/rupture. The major reduction in maternal mortality rate was probably associated with advances in resuscitation, intensive-care medicine, and surgical intervention, including liver transplantation and arterial embolization.

ReviewMedical, ethical, and legal considerations in fertility preservation.
The past 2 decades have seen a significant rise in cancer survival rates, and an increasing proportion of survivors at reproductive age are interested in childbearing. Although assisted reproduction provides physicians with an array of potential possibilities to help patients whose fertility is compromised by cancer treatment, there is still a dearth of regulation regarding the application of this technology. The present paper reviews the current options for fertility preservation, with a particular focus on the legal and ethical challenges that confront providers of this type of care.

Review Case ReportsRetinal detachment in association with pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome.
To review case reports of retinal detachment in women with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. ⋯ Retinal detachment in pre-eclampsia/eclampsia might be associated with HELLP syndrome, indicating that microangiophatic hemolysis might have a role in the pathophysiology of retinal detachment. Its occurrence might not be correlated with the severity of pre-eclampsia because pre-eclampsia is a constellation of signs and symptoms (persistent vasospasms with hemolysis and hypoalbuminemia) rather than simply being hypertension.

ReviewPrevention of nausea and vomiting during termination of pregnancy.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is common in women undergoing dilatation and curettage under general anesthesia for pregnancy termination, and many studies suggest treating these women prophylactically for PONV. ⋯ All antiemetics used in the last 20 years to prevent PONV are effective (some more than others) in women undergoing dilatation and curettage for pregnancy termination. However, there is a need for benefit and risk analyses of the different treatments.

ReviewTwo million intrapartum-related stillbirths and neonatal deaths: where, why, and what can be done?
Intrapartum-related neonatal deaths ("birth asphyxia") are a leading cause of child mortality globally, outnumbering deaths from malaria. Reduction is crucial to meeting the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), and is intimately linked to intrapartum stillbirths as well as maternal health and MDG 5, yet there is a lack of consensus on what works, especially in weak health systems. ⋯ Each year the deaths of 2 million babies are linked to complications during birth and the burden is inequitably carried by the poor. Evidence-based strategies are urgently needed to reduce the burden of intrapartum-related deaths particularly in low- and middle-income settings where 60 million women give birth at home.
