Usefulness of serum albumin and serum total cholesterol in the prediction of hospital death in older patients with severe, acute heart failure.
Acute heart failure (HF) carries high hospital mortality rates in older patients; a multimarker strategy may help identify patients at high risk. ⋯ Hypoalbuminaemia offers powerful additional prognostic information to usual prognostic variables in older patients with severe, acute HF, and deserves further attention in multimarker strategies.

Multicenter StudyInitial hospital pulse pressure and cardiovascular outcomes in acute coronary syndrome.
The association between admission pulse pressure (PP) and cardiovascular outcomes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is not well defined. ⋯ In ACS, all blood pressure variables were significantly correlated. Low PP was an independent predictor for stroke and mortality in overall ACS. Although PP was not superior to systolic blood pressure, only low PP was an independent predictor for recurrent ischaemia in NSTE-ACS.

Multicenter StudyModelling of blood pressure and total cardiovascular risk outcomes after second-line valsartan therapy: the BSCORE study.
European guidelines recommend that antihypertensive management should be graded as a function of total cardiovascular risk. ⋯ Second-line valsartan therapy improves blood pressure outcomes under variable real-world conditions, and is associated with a decrease in total cardiovascular risk. Optimizing antihypertensive effectiveness, including the reduction of residual cardiovascular risk, involves managing concomitant conditions and risk factors, improving adherence, and identifying physician-level factors amenable to intervention.
