Abnormal glucose metabolism in acute myocardial infarction: influence on left ventricular function and prognosis.
We studied the influence of abnormal glucose metabolism on left ventricular (LV) function and prognosis in 203 patients with acute myocardial infarction. ⋯ Although perturbations in glucose metabolism were linearly associated with impairment of LV function in the early phase of acute myocardial infarction, this relationship alone did not explain the excess mortality in patients with newly detected or known diabetes.

Comparative StudyIntraoperative fluorescence imaging system for on-site assessment of off-pump coronary artery bypass graft.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the intraoperative fluorescence imaging (IFI) system in the real-time assessment of graft patency during off-pump coronary artery bypass graft. ⋯ The IFI system enables on-site assessment of graft patency, providing both morphologic and functional information. This technique may help reduce procedure-related, early graft failures in off-pump bypass patients.

Right atrial volume index in chronic systolic heart failure and prognosis.
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between right atrial volume index (RAVI) and right ventricular (RV) systolic and diastolic function, as well as long-term prognosis in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (HF). ⋯ In patients with chronic systolic HF, RAVI is a determinant of right-sided systolic dysfunction. This quantitative and reproducible echocardiographic marker provides independent risk prediction of long-term adverse clinical events.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyLow-flow aortic stenosis in asymptomatic patients: valvular-arterial impedance and systolic function from the SEAS Substudy.
This study sought to assess the impact of valvuloarterial impedance on left ventricular (LV) myocardial systolic function in asymptomatic aortic valve stenosis (AS). ⋯ LV global load impacts LV myocardial function in asymptomatic AS independent of other main covariates of LV systolic function. LV myocardial systolic dysfunction is common in asymptomatic AS in particular in patients with low-flow AS and increased valvuloarterial afterload, whereas EF is generally preserved. Impact of plaque composition on cardiac troponin elevation after percutaneous coronary intervention: an ultrasound analysis.
We used virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) to study the relationship between pre-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) coronary plaque characteristics and post-PCI cardiac troponin I (cTnI) elevation. ⋯ The VH-IVUS analysis shows that post-PCI cTnI elevation occurs in lesions with a large necrotic core area. The VH-IVUS may play an important role in detecting which lesions are high risks for myocardial necrosis after PCI.
