This research was planned to identify the attitudes of emergency department nurses towards patient safety. The study was performed as descriptive. The universe of the research the universe comprised hospitals defined as 3rd level according to Turkish health care classification, which provides service to all health disciplines in Istanbul. ⋯ The attitudes of nurses towards patient safety were compared by age, gender, marital status, education level, ED experience and there was no meaningful difference. However, a meaningful difference was found between the age groups and the "defining stress" sub-dimension of the Patient Safety Attitudes Scale. ED nurses' status of certification for emergency care, patient safety training, training of quality, hospitals' or ED's quality certification status had no significant statistical difference.

Quantification of burnout in emergency nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Previous studies showed increased levels of absenteeism, drug abuse, depression, and symptoms allied with burnout in emergency nurses. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify the three dimensions of burnout in emergency nurses and estimate the proportion of nurses who experience higher than tolerable levels of burnout. ⋯ Burnout is detrimental to achieving high-quality healthcare services and causes a loss of productivity. It is high time for nursing leader and management personnel to identify appropriate measures to counteract burnout.

Workplace Violence in the health environment is a growing issue worldwide. Emergency department have been identified asa high-risk setting for Workplace Violence and emergency nurses are most exposed to this phenomenon. To address workplace violence in the ED effectively, it is critical to understand frameworks established in the literature to assist in development of appropriate interventions and corrective measures. An overview of available theories of violence towards emergency nurses in the literature is presented herein in the format of a narrative review. ⋯ Both the theories on violence developed by nurses and those derived from other disciplines are complex and many key elements are invariably intertwined. Understanding such theories might be useful to manage violence towards emergency nurses with greater effectiveness.

The Institute of Medicine recognizes that the workplace environment is a crucial factor in the ability of nurses to provide safe and effective care, and thus interactions that affect the quality and safety of the work environment require exploration. ⋯ Workplace bullying is a significant factor in the dynamics of patient care, nursing work culture, and nursing retention. The impact on patient care cannot be overestimated, both in terms of errors, substandard care, and the negative effects of high turnover of experienced RNs who leave, compounded by the inexperience of newly hired RNs. An assessment of hospital work environments should include nurse perceptions of workplace bullying, and interventions should focus on effective managerial processes for handling workplace bullying. Future research should include testing of the theoretical coherence of the model, and the testing of bullying interventions to determine the effect on workplace environment, nursing intent to leave/retention, and patient outcomes.

Emergency department staff members are frequently exposed to workplace violence which may have physical, psychological, and workforce related consequences. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between exposure to workplace violence, tolerance to violence, expectations of violence, perceptions of workplace safety, and Professional Quality of Life (compassion satisfaction - CS, burnout - BO, secondary traumatic stress - STS) among emergency department staff members. ⋯ Exposure to non-physical workplace violence can significantly impact staff members' compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Greater attention should be paid to the effect of non-physical workplace violence. Additionally, addressing tolerance to violence and perceptions of safety in the workplace may impact Professional Quality of Life.
