Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyThe effects of mometasone furoate and desloratadine in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients with allergic rhinitis.
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are worldwide prevalent diseases. These diseases impair patient quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of treatment of AR on OSAS by objective and subjective methods. ⋯ Nasal obstruction due to nasal congestion causes increases in airway resistance and can lead to development of OSAS. We concluded that treating AR with Ns has both positive effects on OSAS and daily activity. However, adding Ah to this treatment did not show improved effects compared with placebo treatment.

Randomized Controlled TrialAdvantages of glove finger-coated polyvinyl acetate pack in endoscopic sinus surgery.
This study investigated the efficacy of glove finger-coated polyvinyl acetate (PA) pack on hemostasis, pain levels, and wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). ⋯ PA packing in a glove finger is advantageous in terms of pain, bleeding on packing removal, and postoperative wound healing, compared with PA pack only.

Randomized Controlled TrialBilateral sphenopalatine ganglion blockade improves postoperative analgesia after endoscopic sinus surgery.
Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a common procedure preferably done with an anesthetic technique ensuring effective postoperative analgesia while speeding discharge home. Although anesthesia administered locally in conjunction with vasoconstricting agents is known to minimize intraoperative bleeding, its usefulness in providing postoperative analgesia has not been well characterized. The results supporting the use of regional anesthesia for sinus surgery have also been limited. Using a randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled design, we evaluated recovery times, opioid consumption, and nausea and vomiting after ESS when patients were randomized to either general anesthesia (GA) alone or with regional blockade. ⋯ Regional anesthesia using targeted nerve blocks is effective in ESS. The combination of GA and SPG blockade appears to shorten hospital stay and reduce narcotic requirements in the recovery area. No demonstrable benefits were observed after 24 hours regarding pain management.

Randomized Controlled TrialIntravenous esmolol infusion improves surgical fields during sevoflurane-anesthetized endoscopic sinus surgery: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
There is increasing evidence to support the use of anesthetics to affect operative fields during endoscopic sinus surgery and thus the speed, thoroughness, and safety of the surgery itself. Previous research has suggested preoperative beta-blockers improve surgical fields (SFs); our study is novel in showing the impact of a beta-blocker infusion on SFs during sinus surgery. ⋯ Esmolol-induced relative hypotension and bradycardia during endoscopic sinus surgery achieves significantly improved SFs relative to saline control.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyAssessment of palatability of two sublingual diluents in allergic patients: a prospective pilot study.
Taste of diluents could have an effect on the ultimate patient compliance and acceptability of allergenic extract formulations used in sublingual allergy immunotherapy. This study assessed the palatability and compared the flavor and taste preferences of two sublingual diluents in allergic adult patients. ⋯ Fifty percent glycerin had better taste attributes and phenolated saline induced unpleasant oral sensation on sublingual dosing.
