Adjuvant chemotherapy has been known as a standard treatment for patients with resected colon cancer. However, in elderly colon cancer patients, the characteristics of patients are heterogeneous with regard to life expectancy and comorbidities. Thus, with regard to the effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer, it is difficult to extrapolate data of clinical trials from the younger into the older general population. ⋯ Adjuvant chemotherapy for elderly patients with Stage II colon cancer is not effective, whereas elderly patients with Stage III with adjuvant chemotherapy appear to have a better survival rate in the general population.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) provide a promising therapeutic option for selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. The use of intraperitoneal oxaliplatin seems to further improve the efficacy of the combined treatment concept. Nevertheless, additional toxicity might be expected. ⋯ Our data suggest that the use of IP oxaliplatin in the context of CRS and HIPEC does not significantly increase perioperative morbidity and/or mortality rates. Nevertheless, randomized controlled trials are required to determine the optimal intraperitoneal chemotherapeutic regimen regarding toxicity, postoperative complications, and oncological outcome.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) has shown promise for ablation of lesions in proximity to vital structures in the preclinical setting. This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of IRE for hepatic tumors in the clinical setting. ⋯ IRE appears to be a safe treatment for hepatic tumors in proximity to vital structures. Further prospective evaluation is needed to determine the optimal effectiveness of IRE in relation to size and technique for IRE of the liver.

Co-signaling molecules play an important role in T cells. Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is an immunoinhibitory receptor and its overexpression on T cells appears to be involved in immune evasion in cancer patients. The present study was designed to investigate PD-1 expression on T cells and its relationship with immune evasion in gastric cancer patients. ⋯ Upregulation of PD-1 on both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells may be, in part, responsible for immune evasion in gastric cancer patients.

A new classification of pulmonary adenocarcinoma has been recently proposed by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society (IASLC/ATS/ERS). This study was undertaken in an attempt to explore the clinical implication of this new classification in Chinese patients. ⋯ We have demonstrated a valuable prognostic role of the new classification in Chinese patients. This new classification is valuable of screening out patients with high risk of recurrence to receive postoperative adjuvant therapy.
