Unintentional cutting or piercing injuries at home amongst young and middle-aged New Zealanders resulting in hospital admission: context and characteristics.
This study investigated the characteristics and contexts of unintentional cutting or piercing injuries at home amongst young and middle-aged adults. ⋯ Prevention strategies aimed at reducing the burden of cutting or piercing injuries occurring at home should focus on those most at risk including males aged 20-24 years, from injury by sharp glass, and those aged 40-64 years, from powered lawnmower, hand tool or household machinery-related injuries.

Characteristics of acute treatment costs of traumatic brain injury in Eastern China--a multi-centre prospective observational study.
This study investigated acute treatment costs and related factors for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in eastern China based on a prospective multicentre study. ⋯ Our results have potential implications for health-care resource planning during TBI treatment. Measures to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the LOS may help to reduce acute hospitalization costs.

Falls have been identified as a leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality in India. However, very little is known about the context and characteristics of such falls. The aim of this study was to describe the context and characteristics of fall related injuries in patients admitted to hospital for fall injury. ⋯ Fall related injuries are an important contributor to hospital emergency presentations, particularly falls from buildings in children, and slips and trips in older people. Given the high proportion of falls that resulted in head injury and death, there is a significant need to develop appropriate interventions to prevent such falls.

Effectiveness of motorcycle protective clothing: riders' health outcomes in the six months following a crash.
Little is known about the contribution of protective clothing worn in motorcycle crashes to subsequent health-related outcomes, impairment and quality of life. ⋯ We found strong associations between use of protective clothing and mitigation of the consequences of injury in terms of post-crash health and well-being. Given this evidence it seems likely that the use of protective clothing will confer significant benefits to riders in the event of a crash.

Trauma is a major cause of paediatric morbidity and mortality, yet knowledge of fluid resuscitation is limited. Our objectives were to determine current practises in resuscitation volume (RV) administered to paediatric non-haemorrhagic (NH) blunt trauma patients and to identify fluid related complications. ⋯ The range of median RV administered to paediatric NH blunt trauma patients with ISS ≥ 12 was 22-26 ml/kg/24h. The RV administered was excessive based on high urine outputs and the presence of fluid-related complications. Further evaluation of RV triggers and endpoints used by paediatric traumatologists is required.
