- We aimed to investigate how pre-bending affects the mechanical properties, specifically fatigue, of stainless-steel plates. ⋯ We found that contrary to orthopaedic folklore, pre-bending of plates is not detrimental to fatigue resistance of the stainless-steel plates we tested. Pre-bending plates in a single plane increased the fatigue properties of the 10-hole stainless-steel plate tested.

Blast injuries include the various types of internal and external trauma caused by the impact force of high-speed blast waves with multiple mechanisms involved. Thoracic blast exposure could induce neurotrauma as well, but effective therapies are lacking. Resveratrol is a polyphenol flavonoid secreted by plants and has been shown to provide cardiovascular protection and play anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation and anti-cancer roles. ⋯ In brain tissue, resveratrol significantly attenuated thoracic blast exposure-induced generation of ROS and expressions of IRE-α and CHOP, lowered the expressions of Bax and p53, and maintained Bcl-2 expression (P < 0.05). Additionally, resveratrol significantly ameliorated thoracic blast exposure-induced increases of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB and the decrease in nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2) expression in the brain (P < 0.05). Our results indicate that resveratrol has a protective effect on thoracic blast exposure-induced brain injury that is likely mediated through the Nrf2/Keap1 and NF-κB signaling pathways.

The tension band technique is the most common method for internal fixation of transverse patellar fractures. Titanium cable and high-strength sutures have been successfully applied in this treatment; however, few studies have compared the Nice knot technique using sutures with the standard cable technique. Whether the suture technique (Nice knot) provides preferable results compared with those of the cable technique is unclear. ⋯ The suture tension band technique using braided polyester nonabsorbable sutures tied with Nice knot was as effective as the cable tension band technique for transverse patellar fracture management. However, more convenient operations, less cost and fewer complications were found in suture fixation (Nice knot).

To evaluate the correlation between post-traumatic functional and psychological outcomes in patients with severe pelvic ring injuries. ⋯ Lower functional outcomes in patients with Tile C pelvic injuries were correlated with more severe symptoms of depression and anxiety. We recommend that providers consider and treat patients' mental health condition during posttraumatic recovery.

Falanga: The clinical correlates of surgical outcomes as a result of foot whipping in a resource poor setting.
Falanga is a punishment that involves hitting the bare soles of a person's feet. The consequences of this punishment may be limb and life-threatening. Post-traumatic acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to rhabdomyolysis is a well-documented complication. Patients often require prompt surgical intervention and renal replacement therapy (RRT). The clinical and biochemical presentation of these patients and subsequent outcomes are poorly understood. ⋯ Patients who present following falanga frequently require surgical intervention and the related healthcare utilisation and morbidity is high. Clinical indicators of a greater systemic injury at presentation may correlate with an increased likelihood of requiring surgical intervention or RRT.
