We aimed in this case series to identify shortcomings in assessment of long-term painful and psychosocial consequences of EI and to demonstrate the value of biopsychosocial assessment and the commonalities in outcomes. ⋯ Biological, psychological and social consequences of EI revealed extensive similarities. Disability was generally severe, moreso than indicated in clinical records, influenced by relative paucity of primary pathology, inadequate pain-orientated somatosensory testing and insufficient application of biopsychosocial assessment and management.

Predictors of 12 month functional outcomes and length of stay of severely injured children in NSW, Australia. A longitudinal multi-centre study.
The majority of paediatric injury outcomes studies focus on mortality rather than the impact on long-term quality of life, health care use and other health-related outcomes. This study sought to determine predictors of 12-month functional and psychosocial outcomes for children sustaining major injury in NSW. ⋯ Hospital length of stay and polytrauma are independent factors that negatively influence psychological and physical outcomes of children with major injuries. Early intervention to enable emotional well-being, discharge home and long-term follow up such as dedicated family support and rehabilitation at home could reduce preventable poor outcomes.

This study aims to determine if sternal fracture is a predictor of discharge requiring additional care and mortality. ⋯ Sternal fracture is a severe injury in the pediatric population, but it is not independently associated with need for a higher level of care after discharge or mortality.

Splenic injuries are the most common visceral injury following blunt abdominal trauma. Increasingly, non-operative management (NOM) and the use of adjunctive splenic angioembolization (ASE) is favoured over operative management (OM) for the hemodynamically stable patient. However, clinical predictors for successful NOM, particularly the role of ASE as an adjunct, remain poorly defined. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing ASE vs NOM. ⋯ ASE as an adjunct to NOM significantly reduces the length of stay in BSI patients and is most successful in managing AAST grade III injuries.
