This purpose of this meta analysis was to investigate and quantify the relative risk of hip fracture in patients who have sustained a wrist fracture. ⋯ Risk of a subsequent hip fracture is increased for women who suffer a wrist fracture (RR 1.43). Resources and preventative measures should be targeted towards these high risk patients to prevent the catastrophic event of a hip fracture. This meta analysis confirms and quantifies the increased relative risk of hip fracture after wrist fracture in women.

Masquelet technique: myth or reality? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The induced membrane technique (IMT) or Masquelet technique, is a two-step surgical procedure used to treat pseudoarthroses and bony defects. Many authors have introduced variants to the technique. This study aims to compare the surgical variants of IMT and to evaluate its efficacy in achieving infection eradication and bone union. ⋯ Further studies are needed to demonstrate the role the patients' clinical features and IMT variants have upon achieving bone union and infection eradication.

Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries and nonsurgical treatment has proven to yield good to excellent clinical results. A small percentage of these fractures go on to delayed or nonunion and the incidence and risk factors for this complication are poorly understood. We hypothesize that adjacent joint stiffness of the glenohumeral joint might lead to an increased rate of nonunion for proximal humerus fractures. ⋯ The coexistence of shoulder OA or a diagnosis of RA nearly doubled in the incidence of proximal humerus nonunion. This is the first study investigating this association in the shoulder and should be considered along with traditional nonunion risk factors in the treatment algorithm.

Results of crossed versus lateral entry K-wire fixation of displaced pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Supracondylar humeral fractures (SCHF) are among the most common injuries in children. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate functional and radiographic outcome after crossed and lateral K-wire fixation for displaced extension-type SCHF, and complications related to the type of K-wire construction used. ⋯ Crossed and lateral entry pin fixation of SCHF result in similar construct stability and functional outcome. Although ulnar nerve injury was three times more likely in the crossed K-wire group, the overall incidence of this complication was very low. The available evidence does not support the use of either approach for daily practice. If the surgeon wishes to avoid all potential risk of iatrogenic ulnar nerve injury, the lateral K-wire approach is safest.

Factors affecting mortality in older trauma patients-A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Major trauma in older people is a significant health burden in the developed world. The aging of the population has resulted in larger numbers of older patients suffering serious injury. Older trauma patients are at greater risk of death from major trauma, but the reasons for this are less well understood. The aim of this review was to identify the factors affecting mortality in older patients suffering major injury. ⋯ Multiple factors contribute to mortality risk in older trauma patients. The relation between these factors and mortality is complex, and a fuller understanding of the contribution of each factor is needed to develop a better predictive model for trauma outcomes in older people. More research is required to identify patient and process factors affecting mortality in older patients.
