Clinical comparison between open plating and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis for displaced proximal humeral fractures: A prospective randomized controlled trial.
Recently, minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has been widely used for the treatment of proximal humeral fractures. However, there is concern about whether the MIPO in comminuted proximal humeral fractures is also comparable to open plating. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of open plating and MIPO for acute displaced proximal humeral fractures. ⋯ This study showed MIPO in proximal humerus fractures had similar clinical and radiographic outcomes compared to the open plating. However, the MIPO technique in proximal humerus fracture provided significantly shorter operation time than the open plating.

Nadroparin or fondaparinux versus no thromboprophylaxis in patients immobilised in a below-knee plaster cast (PROTECT): A randomised controlled trial.
The immobilisation of the lower leg is associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, thromboprophylaxis in patients with a below-knee plaster cast remains controversial. We examined the efficacy and safety of nadroparin and fondaparinux to ascertain the need for thromboprophylaxis in these patients. ⋯ Thromboprophylaxis with nadroparin or fondaparinux significantly reduces the risk of DVT in patients with an ankle or foot fracture who were treated in a below-knee cast without any major adverse events.

Shared decision making in the management of midshaft clavicular fractures: Nonoperative treatment or plate fixation.
Most patients with a displaced midshaft clavicular fracture can be treated either operatively or nonoperatively, with similar long-term outcomes. The treatment choice depends on individual preferences, and is therefore suited for a shared decision making (SDM) approach. However, little is known about SDM in fracture treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current daily practice of shared decisional behaviour in clavicular fracture treatment, in order to assess the need for improvement and set a baseline level for future research. ⋯ The patient-reported level of SDM in treatment decisions for clavicular fractures was high, but not all patients had the role in this process that they preferred. To improve patients' involvement in the treatment decision making process for clavicular fractures, it is important to create general awareness about SDM, and increase knowledge of orthopaedic trauma surgeons about SDM behaviour.

The impact of hemocoagulase for improvement of coagulation and reduction of bleeding in fracture-related hip hemiarthroplasty geriatric patients: A prospective, single-blinded, randomized, controlled study.
Uncontrolled bleeding is associated with poor outcomes and mortality in geriatric patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty. Hemocoagulase agkistrodon is a hemocoagulative, anti-hemorrhagic enzyme complex from Deinagkistrodon acutus snake venom. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of hemocoagulase agkistrodon on coagulation and bleeding outcomes in fracture-related hemiarthroplasty. ⋯ Hemocoagulase reduced blood loss and transfusion in fracture-related hip hemiarthroplasty without increasing short-term adverse event rates. In geriatric populations, hemocoagulase could be used for limiting bleeding and related complications.

The outcomes of pediatric femoral shaft fractures treated surgically by different types of orthopedists.
The objective of this study was to compare the outcomes of pediatric femoral shaft fractures treated with titanium elastic nail (TEN) by pediatric orthopedists and non-pediatric orthopedists. ⋯ This study indicated that both pediatric and non-pediatric orthopedists provided satisfactory clinical and functional results in treating these common injuries.
