Hypernatremia is a common problem among patients with severe burn injuries and seems to be associated with an unfavorable clinical outcome. The current study was designed to evaluate the impact of antibiotics with a high proportion of sodium on this phenomenon. ⋯ The amount of sodium in antibiotics seems to have a relevant impact on the serum Na during the early stages of severe burn injury. Therefore, this aspect should be taken into account when searching for the most appropriate antibiotic treatment for patients with severe burn injury, especially when being at acute risk for a clinical relevant hypernatremia.

Rib fractures (RFs) are the leading type of single serious injury in New South Wales trauma patients. Uncontrolled pain drives the sequelae of atelectasis, pneumonia, respiratory failure, and death in severe cases. Opioids are the mainstay of management; however, they carry numerous adverse effects. Understanding patient or injury factors which predict opioid requirement is important to tailor management. Existing evidence is limited to metropolitan trauma centres (MTCs). ⋯ The model is effective at identifying predictors of opioid use in this regional centre, which are similar to those described in evidence from MTCs. However, the low R2 with wide prediction intervals limits its utility on an individual level.

Most patients use a traditional socket prosthesis (TSP) to ambulate independently following transtibial amputation. However, these patients generally require prosthesis repairs more than twice annually and an entirely new prosthesis every two years. Furthermore, transtibial amputation patients have four times the skin ulceration rate of transfemoral patients, prompting more frequent prosthesis refitting and diminished use. Trans-Tibial osseointegration (TTOI) is a promising technique to address the limitations of TSP, but remains understudied with only four cohorts totaling 41 total procedures reported previously. Continued concerns regarding the risk of infection and questions as to functional capacity postoperatively have slowed adoption of TTOI worldwide. ⋯ 2 (Therapeutic investigation, Observational study with dramatic effect).
