Self-reported depressive symptoms and memory complaints in survivors five years after ARDS.
Survivors of ARDS report depressive symptoms and memory complaints, the prevalence of which after 5 years is unknown. ⋯ Compared with ∼ 2 years postdischarge from the ICU, depressive symptoms and memory complaints were similar at 5 years. Mental health domains of the SF-36 may not be sensitive to small changes in mood symptoms.

Relation of natriuretic peptide concentrations to central sleep apnea in patients with heart failure.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is frequent among patients with heart failure (HF) and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Elevated cardiac filling pressures promote CSA and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) secretion. We hypothesized that circulating natriuretic peptide concentrations predict CSA. ⋯ Risk of CSA is related to severity of HF. ANP and BNP concentrations performed similarly for detection of CSA; low concentrations appear associated with low risk for CSA in men.

Measuring a change in self-efficacy following pulmonary rehabilitation: an evaluation of the PRAISE tool.
Self-efficacy explores the emotional functioning and coping skills of an individual and is thought to be a strong predictor of health behaviors, which is particularly important for pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). However, to our knowledge, there is no measure of self-efficacy developed to explore behavior change in the context of PR. ⋯ The PRAISE tool is a reliable and sensitive measure of self-efficacy for patients with COPD attending PR.

Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 modulates endothelial apoptosis in obstructive sleep apnea.
Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1 (LOX-1) is the major receptor for oxidized low-density lipoprotein in endothelial cells, and its expression is enhanced in proatherogenic settings. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between LOX-1 in freshly harvested human venous endothelial cells and apoptotic circulating endothelial cells in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). ⋯ Increased expression of LOX-1 in vivo is associated with endothelial apoptosis. Adherence to CPAP therapy may reverse these derangements.

Automated quantification of high-resolution CT scan findings in individuals at risk for pulmonary fibrosis.
Automated methods to quantify interstitial lung disease (ILD) on high-resolution CT (HRCT) scans in people at risk for pulmonary fibrosis have not been developed and validated. ⋯ Automated computer scoring of HRCT scans can objectively identify ILD and potentially quantify radiographic severity of lung disease in populations at risk for pulmonary fibrosis.
