The Management of Benign Pleural Effusions using Indwelling Pleural Catheters - A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The indwelling pleural catheter (IPC), which was initially introduced for the management of recurrent malignant effusions, could be a valuable management option for recurrent benign pleural effusion (BPE), replacing chemical pleurodesis. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy and safety of IPC use in the management of refractory nonmalignant effusions. ⋯ IPCs are an effective and viable option in the management of patients with refractory BPE. The quality of evidence to support IPC use for BPE remains low, and high-quality studies such as randomized controlled trials are needed.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Comparative effectiveness and safety of pre-operative lung localization for pulmonary nodules: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
An optimal method of preoperative localization for pulmonary nodules has yet to be established. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the success and complication rates associated with three pulmonary nodule localization methods for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS): hook-wire localization, microcoil localization, and lipiodol localization. ⋯ All three localization methods yielded similarly highly successful targeting rates. However, hook-wire localization had a relatively lower successful operative field targeting rate because of dislodgement or migration. Lipiodol localization had the highest overall success rate, and microcoil localization yielded the lowest complication rates.

Prognostic Significance of Right Heart Thrombi in Patients with Acute Symptomatic Pulmonary Embolism: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
For patients diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), the prognostic significance of concomitant right heart thrombi (RHT) lacks clarity. ⋯ In patients diagnosed with acute PE, concomitant RHT were significantly associated with an increased risk of death within 30 days of PE diagnosis.

Accuracy of lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of pneumonia in adults: systematic review and meta-analysis.
Some studies suggest that lung ultrasonography could be useful for diagnosing pneumonia; moreover, it has a more favorable safety profile and lower cost than chest radiography and CT. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of bedside lung ultrasonography for diagnosing pneumonia in adults through a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ Lung ultrasonography can help accurately diagnose pneumonia, and it may be promising as an adjuvant resource to traditional approaches.

Prophylaxis against atrial fibrillation after general thoracic surgery: Trial sequential analysis and network meta-analysis.
Postoperative atrial fibrillation/flutter (POAF) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality after general thoracic surgery, but the need for and the best agent for prophylaxis remains obscure. ⋯ The current literature supports the effectiveness and tolerability of medical prophylaxis and the superiority of β-blockers in preventing POAF after general thoracic surgery. β-Blockers are recommended, taking into consideration the status of the bronchopulmonary system.
