Review Meta Analysis Comparative StudyHydroxyethyl starch for cardiovascular surgery: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.
The objective of this study was to appraise the safety profiles of HES preparations and to find out which HES preparation was the most acceptable in cardiovascular surgery through a comparison with control solutions. ⋯ Perioperative administration of HES preparations is comparatively safe. The data appraising safety profiles of HES preparations are insufficient to make direct comparisons among themselves. As the third generation of HES preparations, HES 130 kD showed a trend toward lower blood loss and transfusion rates and is a suitable choice for cardiovascular surgery.

Meta AnalysisRisk of high-grade bleeding in patients with cancer treated with bevacizumab: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
High-grade bleeding is a serious adverse event associated with bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor and widely used in the current cancer treatments. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the overall incidence and risk of high-grade bleeding in cancer patients who receive bevacizumab therapy. ⋯ Among the patients included in the trials analyzed in this meta-analysis, the addition of bevacizumab to cancer chemotherapy significantly increased the risk of high-grade bleeding. The risk may be dose-dependent and may vary with tumor type.

Meta AnalysisRivaroxaban versus enoxaparin for thromboprophylaxis after total hip or knee arthroplasty: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Rivaroxaban is a newly developed oral medicine that direct inhibits factor Xa for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban versus enoxaparin, a medicine routinely used for thromboprophylaxis after total hip or knee arthroplasty. ⋯ Rivaroxaban was more effective than the recommended dose of enoxaparin and had a similar safety profile for thromboprophylaxis after hip and knee arthroplasty.

Meta AnalysisHaemodynamics of intravenous paracetamol in neonates.
Reports on the haemodynamics of intravenous (iv) paracetamol in adult intensive care were recently published. We therefore wanted to explore the haemodynamics of iv paracetamol in neonates. ⋯ In a setting of open label administration to alleviate (procedural) pain, haemodynamic effects of iv paracetamol in neonates remained modest. We suggest considering impaired haemodynamics to be a relative contra-indication for iv paracetamol in neonates.

Meta AnalysisDoes the use of probiotics/synbiotics prevent postoperative infections in patients undergoing abdominal surgery? A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Advances in surgery have considerably lowered postoperative morbidity. However, infection remains a considerable morbidity factor. The aim of this review is to identify the potential benefit(s) of the perioperative administration of probiotics/synbiotics to patients undergoing abdominal surgery. ⋯ The use of probiotics/synbiotics may reduce postoperative infections after abdominal surgery. This is a promising infection-preventive measure that may decrease morbidity, length of antibiotic therapy, duration of hospital stay, and pressure for emergence of antimicrobial resistance. However, the results of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution due to the significant heterogeneity of the studies included.
