To compare epidemiological studies dealing with neurological issues (compatible with Hg toxicity) linked to exposing newborns and infants to intramuscular doses of preservative-Hg resulting from vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCV). ⋯ Since the use of TCV is still inevitable in many countries, this increases the need to protect vulnerable infants and promote actions that strengthen neurodevelopment. Developing countries should intensify campaigns that include breastfeeding among efforts to help prime the central nervous system to tolerate exposure to neurotoxic substances, especially thimerosal-Hg.

Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) or Berardinelli-Seip Syndrome (BSCL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by complete absence of adipose tissue and by several metabolic alterations in carbohydrate (diabetes mellitus) and lipid metabolism and involvement of heart, bone and ovaries. Mental retardation and psychiatric disturbances are present in a variable proportion of affected patients. In the present review, the major advances in clinical, molecular and genetic characterization of BSCL affected subjects are recorded and discussed.

The number of patients with end stage renal failure has been increasing throughout the world. The importance of measuring clinical parameters in renal injury has been emphasized for administering appropriate treatment and preventing a worsening of the disease. However, there are no clinically useful markers in predicting and monitoring the progression of renal disease. ⋯ In some clinical studies, urinary excretion of L-FABP was shown to be an excellent clinical marker that can help predict and monitor the progression of renal disease. The dynamics of renal L-FABP in pathophysiological settings has been revealed in experimental studies using transgenic mice with the human L-FABP gene. This review presents recent findings on the function and pathophysiological role of L-FABP, and summarizes the clinical importance of measuring urinary L-FABP in renal disease.

The serum total bilirubin concentration at any point in time represents the amount of bilirubin being produced minus that being excreted. Hyperbilirubinemia develops when bilirubin production exceeds the body's capacity to excrete it, primarily by conjugation. When extreme, hyperbilirubinemia may lead to the development of free bilirubin, that form of bilirubin which may cross the blood-brain barrier and enter and damage the basal nuclei of the brain. ⋯ Hyperbilirubinemia is a condition of major importance and a source of concern to all involved in the management of the newborn. Its prevention and management should be based on the recently revised American Academy of Pediatric guidelines, with special attention paid to neonates manifesting risk factors for kernicterus. Close cooperation between the clinical laboratory and the medical team managing the newborn is an essential component in the management of a hyperbilirubinemic baby.

To evaluate the accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), neopterin, and endotoxin in the differential diagnosis of sepsis and non-infectious systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). ⋯ The diagnostic capacity of PCT is superior to that of CRP due to the close correlation between PCT levels and the severity of sepsis and outcome. Neopterin is very useful in the diagnosis of viral infection. The endotoxin assay in combination with CRP, PCT, or neopterin may help as a diagnostic marker for Gram-negative bacterial infection.
