Meta AnalysisVentilation Strategies During General Anesthesia for Noncardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The optimal ventilation strategy during general anesthesia is unclear. This systematic review investigated the relationship between ventilation targets or strategies (eg, positive end-expiratory pressure [PEEP], tidal volume, and recruitment maneuvers) and postoperative outcomes. ⋯ Although lung-protective ventilation results in a decrease in pulmonary complications, randomized clinical trials provide only limited evidence to guide specific ventilation strategies during general anesthesia for adults undergoing noncardiac surgery.

Visual Analytics to Leverage Anesthesia Electronic Health Record.
Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by interactive visual interfaces called dashboards. In this report, we describe our experience addressing the challenges in visual analytics of anesthesia electronic health record (EHR) data using a commercially available business intelligence (BI) platform. As a primary outcome, we discuss some performance metrics of the dashboards, and as a secondary outcome, we outline some operational enhancements and financial savings associated with deploying the dashboards. ⋯ The customization and visualization of EHR data are both possible and worthwhile for the leveraging of information into easily comprehensible and actionable data for the improvement of health care provision and practice management. Limitations inherent to EHR data presentation make this customization necessary, and continued open access to the underlying data set is essential.

Factors Associated With In-Hospital Post-Cardiac Arrest Survival in a Referral Level Hospital in Uganda.
Cardiac arrest (CA) is still associated with high mortality and morbidity across all practice settings despite resuscitation attempts and advancements in its management. Patient outcomes vary and are affected by multiple factors. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of information on survival after CA and associated factors in low-resource settings such as East Africa where Uganda is located. This study set out to describe post-CA survival, associated factors, and neurological outcome at a hospital in Southwestern Uganda. ⋯ Whereas 7-day survival of resuscitated CA patients at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) was low, survivors had a good neurologic outcome. CA in the OR, CPR <20 minutes, and prevention of hypotension postarrest seemed to be associated with survival.

ReviewMoving Beyond the Pandemic: Insights from a Shared Experience.
For over two years the resilience of humanity was tested with the coronavirus outbreak. At its outset the scientific community rallied and did its very best to disseminate accumulating knowledge in real time to contain the outbreak. Sobering lessons were learned in managing such a global crisis. ⋯ These considerations are summarized in this infographic. It is heartening to see an article and an accompanying editorial in this issue that address what we have learned from our collective experience. It is a testament to the will of the scientific community and health care providers to evolve and overcome, to move beyond discouragement and prevail.
