Research has linked high occupational demands to multiple adverse health outcomes, both physical and mental. As far as we know, researchers have not identified the profile characteristics of military police personnel based on occupational demands. The current study aims to identify profiles based on self-perceived occupational demands and work-related factors. This study is a starting point for characterizing performance and health in a military police population. ⋯ We established two distinct profiles that describe the characteristics reported by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee personnel based on workload and work characteristics. High scores on autonomy, work support, and task clarity predict favorable perceived occupational demands, whereas fatigue and boredom predict unfavorable occupational demands. Remarkably, the physical workload did not predict high perceived occupational demands.

Military tasks place considerable physiological demands on the soldier. It is therefore important to know the energy expenditure of soldiers while solving tasks in different environments. The purpose of this study was to describe the cardiorespiratory demands of certain movements and activities on ground combat soldiers during military field operations using body sensors and simulated combat. ⋯ Conducting military operations in urban terrain and retrograde operations in rough terrain strains ground combat soldiers' cardiorespiratory system, with work intensities close to 40% of maximal aerobic capacity in 15-33% of mission time. Tasks with external load carriage include change of direction, accelerations, bounds, and jumping over obstacles, and physical fitness tests should replicate this. Findings in this study also add objective data to the physiological demands of work performed by combat soldiers while conducting urban operations and retrograde operations in rough terrain. These findings could be used to develop a model for classifying work demands for ground combat forces.

Balance deficits in people with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI; ≥3 months post-mTBI), thought to relate to central sensory integration deficits, are subtle and often difficult to detect. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity of the instrumented modified clinical test of sensory integration for balance (mCTSIB) in identifying such balance deficits in people with symptomatic, chronic mTBI and to establish the associations between balance and mTBI symptom scores in the chronic mTBI group. ⋯ People with chronic mTBI appear to have central sensory integration deficits detectable by instrumented measures of postural assessment. These findings suggest that central sensory integration should be targeted in rehabilitation for people with chronic mTBI.

Repetitive exposure to blast overpressure waves can be a part of routine military and law enforcement training. However, our understanding of the effects of that repetitive exposure on human neurophysiology remains limited. To link an individual's cumulative exposure with their neurophysiological effects, overpressure dosimetry needs to be concurrently collected with relevant physiological signals. Eye tracking has shown promise for providing insight into neurophysiological change because of neural injury, but video-based technology limits usage to a laboratory or clinic. In the present work, we show capability for using electrooculography-based eye tracking to enable physiological assessment in the field during activities involved repetitive blast exposures. ⋯ This study successfully demonstrated that eye tracking can be performed during training activities, such as explosive breaching, and that the modality may provide insight into neurophysiological change across periods of overpressure exposure. The results presented herein show that electrooculography-based eye tracking may be a useful method of assessing individualized physiological effects of overpressure exposure in the field. Future work is focused on time-dependent modeling to assess continuous changes in eye movements as this will enable building dose-response curves.

Eye and vision disorders are estimated to impact 7.08 million people in the United States, including 1.62 million under the age of 40. This study uses the Vision and Eye Health Surveillance System (VEHSS) case definitions to assess the burden of eye and vision disorders in a universally insured, nationally representative population. ⋯ This study represents the first use of VEHSS measures in a universally insured, socioeconomically diverse population. Identification of potentially treatable or preventable conditions indicates significant opportunity to mitigate the burden of eye and vision disorders in the Military Health System.
