Tobacco kills half of its users. Despite this, there are over 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. Its harmful effects impair performance and readiness. Unfortunately, smoking has deeply ingrained in the military culture, as evidenced by the high prevalence. Hence, this study aims to identify the barriers to smoking cessation among this population. ⋯ The findings indicate that in addition to barriers affecting the general population, military-specific barriers related to the nature of the job exist, complicating cessation. Hence, any intervention program should address these barriers to achieve positive outcomes.

Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent after lower limb amputation (LLA). Reports describing longitudinal changes in spine health before and after amputation are rare. This study describes lumbar spine pathology, muscle morphology, and the continuum of care for LBP before and after LLA. ⋯ Lumbar spine health may degrade after amputation. Here, lumbar muscle size did not change after LLA, yet the fat content increased in combination with increases in facet and intervertebral disc degeneration.

Pre-task Intrinsic Cortical Activity in Novice and Experienced Military Specialists: A Cross-sectional Study.
Neuroscience studies brain dynamics through the analysis of electrical signals. Cortical activity estimated by electroencephalography brings accurate information about perceptions of human behavior. The examination of resting states in relation to subsequent behaviors indicates that intrinsic cortical activity (ICA) has implications for decision-making processes, especially when inserted in the context of military activities and associated with stress. The objective of this study was to compare the absolute alpha power (AAP) in the ICA in the pre-task moment of novice specialized military (NG) with experienced (ExpG), associating with the level of stress. ⋯ The AAP in ExpG was significantly higher than that in NG, indicating a lower level of cortical activity and greater efficiency in sensory, motor, and visual tasks.

It is important to understand the correlates of different dietary behaviors in a military context in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to guide intervention development to prevent and treat obesity as it has a significant impact at the country and regional level. This study aimed to assess different dietary behaviors and their association with potential correlates including age, marital status, educational level, smoking status, screen time, dietary knowledge, eating self-efficacy, and general self-efficacy. ⋯ The results show that unhealthy eating patterns are common among new recruits in the UAE military. The study suggests that age, eating self-efficacy, and nutrition knowledge are the main correlates of selected dietary behaviors. Interventions are advised to target these correlates to achieve healthier dietary habits inside the military.

Medical readiness of individual service members (SMs) is an integral component of operational readiness. Electronic Health (eHealth) literacy, here defined as the ability to seek out, find, evaluate, and appraise, integrate, and apply what is gained in electronic environments toward solving a health problem, is a key skill to enhance individual medical readiness. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified health literacy as an important social determinant of health. The Internet enables individuals to access information virtually anywhere, at any place, any time, which is especially beneficial for SMs who serve around the globe, often isolated from modern health care facilities. ⋯ The study highlights a brief 6-item assessment tool that can quickly and efficiently be added to the current validated health and well-being measures for military personnel. This brief assessment can provide a measure of knowledge, skills, and confidence regarding ehealth information leading to better-informed health care decisions in the military context. These findings are especially relevant given the military's current emphasis on modernization and the need to put people first in order to build the overall team and improve unit effectiveness.
