Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyMulticenter randomized controlled trial comparing early versus late aquatic therapy after total hip or knee arthroplasty.
To evaluate if the timing of aquatic therapy influences clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). ⋯ Early start of aquatic therapy had contrary effects after TKA when compared with THA and it influenced clinical outcomes after TKA. Although the treatment differences did not achieve statistically significance, the effect size for early aquatic therapy after TKA had the same magnitude as the effect size of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee. However, the results of this study do not support the use of early aquatic therapy after THA. The timing of physiotherapeutic interventions has to be clearly defined when conducting studies to evaluate the effect of physiotherapeutic interventions after TKA and THA.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on the cartilage repair in people with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis: a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study.
To determine the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial assessing the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (US) therapy on cartilage repair in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Conducting a randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of US therapy on the cartilage repair in people with mild to moderate knee OA is feasible. However, further pilot studies are needed to determine the optimal US dose and application parameters before designing a full trial.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA structured protocol of evidence-based conservative care compared with usual care for acute nonspecific low back pain: a randomized clinical trial.
To compare a protocol of evidence-based conservative care with usual care for acute nonspecific low back pain (LBP) of less than 6 weeks' duration. ⋯ Overall, the 2 treatment groups were similar based on primary or secondary outcome measure scores for the full treatment period (4 weeks, with up to 7 treatments). However, there were statistically significant and clinically meaningful differences in both disability and pain scores at week 2 (midpoint) with 4 treatments, suggesting that the protocol of care had a more rapid effect than usual care.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyA randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of water-based exercise to improve falls risk and physical function in older adults with lower-extremity osteoarthritis.
To investigate the efficacy of a water-based exercise program specifically targeting balance to reduce falls risk and improve measures of balance and physical function in older adults with osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Water-based exercise did not reduce falls risk in our sample compared with attending a computer skills training class. Our study is, to our knowledge, the first to compare water-based exercise in this population with a control group that attended a time-dose-equivalent seated community-based activity. Whether gaining computer skills and going out into the community twice weekly is adequate stimulus to reduce falls risk in people with OA requires further investigation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyMobile telephone short message service reminders can reduce nonattendance in physical therapy outpatient clinics: a randomized controlled trial.
To investigate whether short message service (SMS) reminders reduce nonattendance in physical therapy outpatient clinics. ⋯ SMS reminders can reduce nonattendance in physical therapy outpatient clinics.
