Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialCost-effectiveness analysis of adjuvant physical or occupational therapy for patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
To study from a societal viewpoint the cost-effectiveness of adjuvant treatment for patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) of one upper extremity. ⋯ PT results in clinically relevant improvement in RSD. Costs associated with adjuvant treatment are moderate compared to other medical costs. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of PT versus OT and CT were moderate or even dominant, thus PT was both more effective and less costly than its comparators.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparative analgesic effects of H-wave therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain threshold in humans.
To assess the comparative analgesic efficacy of H-wave therapy (HWT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) using a mechanical model of pain threshold measurement. ⋯ The findings showed that HWT and TENS provided localized hypoalgesia during stimulation and for up to 5 minutes after it. No frequency- or modality-specific effects were observed between the groups.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialHome-based multicomponent rehabilitation program for older persons after hip fracture: a randomized trial.
To determine whether a home-based systematic multicomponent rehabilitation strategy leads to improved outcomes relative to usual care. ⋯ The systematic multicomponent rehabilitation program was no more effective in promoting recovery than usual home-based rehabilitation. Compared with previous cohorts, however, participants randomized to usual care in our study received more rehabilitative and home care services and experienced a higher rate of recovery. This finding is important given the current pressures to reduce home services. The challenge is to determine the composition and duration of rehabilitation and home services that will ensure optimal functional recovery most efficiently in older persons after hip fracture.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialTranscutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: nonparallel antinociceptive effects on chronic clinical pain and acute experimental pain.
To investigate to what extent a single 60-minute session of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) would modify chronic clinical pain, acute experimental pain, and the flexion reflex evoked in chronic low back pain patients. ⋯ The same TENS protocol had different degrees of antinociceptive influence on chronic and acute pain in chronic low back pain patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialVariation in torque production with frequency using medium frequency alternating current.
To investigate the effect of frequency of alternating current on electrically induced torque in healthy subjects, and to establish an optimum frequency for motor stimulation. ⋯ Electrical stimulators using an alternating current waveform typically use a carrier frequency in the range of 2kHz to 4kHz for motor stimulation. This study shows that carrier frequencies in this range, modulated at 50Hz, are a compromise between comfort and maximum torque production. For maximum comfort with a low torque, a frequency close to 10kHz is indicated. For maximum torque, a lower frequency of alternating current (1kHz or less) is preferable.
