Multicenter StudyEffects of therapeutic approach on the neonatal evolution of very low birth weight infants with patent ductus arteriosus.
To analyze the effects of treatment approach on the outcomes of newborns (birth weight [BW] < 1,000 g) with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), from the Brazilian Neonatal Research Network (BNRN) on: death, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH III/IV), retinopathy of prematurity requiring surgical (ROPsur), necrotizing enterocolitis requiring surgery (NECsur), and death/BPD. ⋯ The conservative approach of PDA was associated to high mortality, the surgical approach to the occurrence of BPD36wks and ROPsur, and the pharmacological treatment was protective for the outcome death/BPD36wks.

TLR-2 and TLR-4 expression in monocytes of newborns with late-onset sepsis.
To analyze toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 and TLR-4 expression in monocytes of newborns with late-onset sepsis. ⋯ This study investigated the innate immune response in septic newborns. Septic newborns that relied almost exclusively on the innate immune system showed little in vivo response at monocyte activation, suggesting impaired immune response and increased susceptibility to infection.

[Application of the Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 in pediatric patients with complex chronic conditions].
To evaluate the performance of the Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 (PIM2) in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with a high prevalence of patients with complex chronic conditions (CCCs), and compare the performance between patients with and without CCCs. ⋯ PIM2 showed poor performance in patients with CCCs and in the general population. This result may be secondary to differences in the characteristics between the study samples (high prevalence of patients with CCCs); the performance of the PIM2 should not be ruled out.
