Recurrence of stroke is common and it affects quality of life, mobility, and mortality rates of stroke survivors. Previous studies have shown a paradoxical association between body mass index (BMI) and post-stroke mortality, and a dose-dependent association between second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure and risk of stroke. But the associations between BMI, SHS exposure, and stroke recurrence are unclear. We aimed to examine these associations in stroke survivors. ⋯ The Nethersole School of Nursing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (NUR-CV1102).

Health-care-associated infections characterised by antibiotic drug resistance are a global medical challenge that claims billions of dollars of health-care expenditure. Bacterial adhesion and subsequent formation of biofilms on catheters and tubes are the primary mechanisms through which these infections are initiated and propagated. We tested the efficacy and safety for clinical treatment of a coating based on natural protein, in which immunogenicity was eliminated through physical plasticising, applied to the surfaces of medical devices to inhibit bacterial adhesion. ⋯ National Basic Research Program of China (2014CB964603, 2012CB966300), National Natural Science Foundation of China (81271958), Center for Innovation Technology (MF13-005-LS), William H Goodwin Endowment.

Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is still widely used to treat patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma who have no access to sorafenib in Asia. However, the indication of TACE for these patients has yet to be established. We established an objective point score to guide this decision in patients with advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma. ⋯ This study was supported by grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (81172037/H1606, 81272639, and 81572385), Guangdong province science and technology project of China (2013B021800159), and the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China (13ykzd24).

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia is a rare life-threatening disease characterised by markedly elevated LDL cholesterol concentrations and accelerated atherosclerosis. Few studies have focused specifically on this group of patients, especially in China. We set out to investigate the phenotypical characteristics and the genotype-phenotype correlations of homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia in China. ⋯ National Natural Science Foundation of China (number 81471098).
