The Welsh government recently set a target to be smoke-free by 2030, which means reducing the prevalence of tobacco smoking in adults to 5% by then. The goal is to improve health and population life expectancy. To support this strategy, we identified profile groups with different sets of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics within the population of smokers. We compared these profiles to those identified in the ex-smoker population to provide a broader understanding of smokers and inform targeting of interventions and policy. ⋯ Public Health Wales.

Cancer Research UK ran a mass-media campaign for 6 weeks from Sept 1, 2022, to Sept 13, 2022, targeted to people aged 50 years and older and from a lower social-grade (C2DE) in Northern Ireland. The campaign was developed to target barriers to help-seeking for the target audience. With this evaluation, we aimed to compare reported barriers and self-reported help-seeking before and after the campaign to assess changes potentially related to the campaign. ⋯ Community Foundation for Northern Ireland through the Department of Health Cancer Charities Fund.

Did anonymity in self-administered questionnaires improve disclosure of sensitive information during the 2022 mpox outbreak in England? An observational study.
Between May 6, 2022, and Jan 16, 2023, 3555 mpox cases were reported in England, predominantly in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Initially, the UK Health Security agency administered questionnaires to laboratory-detected cases via telephone calls. From June, 2022, cases were requested by text or email to complete the questionnaire online, with optional anonymous completion. To inform future approaches, we assess whether anonymity improved disclosure of sensitive information. ⋯ None.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are the leading cause of death in England, with prevalence estimated to rise with an ageing population. 2021 cost estimates were £25 billion, rising to an estimated £47 billion in 2050. Brain health clinics (BHC) offer patients with memory concerns access to higher quality memory assessment and imaging than memory clinics, which are the usual care. BHCs aim to offer patients a more accurate and timely diagnosis, resulting in more specific treatment options. BHCs also offer patients the opportunity to take part in research. We aimed to compare the cost of a patient journey through a BHC and a memory clinic as part of an evaluation of the BHC model. ⋯ None.

Associations between parental smoking and teenage alcohol and drug use in the Growing Up in Ireland cohort study: a longitudinal observational study.
Children with a parent who smokes are more likely to become substance users than those who do not have a parent who smokes. In this study, we examined whether childhood or early adolescent exposure to primary parent smoking increased the risk of subsequent teenage alcohol and drug use at ages 17-18 years. ⋯ Royal City of Dublin Hospital Trust, Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme.
