Safety of the RTS,S/AS02D candidate malaria vaccine in infants living in a highly endemic area of Mozambique: a double blind randomised controlled phase I/IIb trial.
Malaria remains a leading global health problem that requires the improved use of existing interventions and the accelerated development of new control methods. We aimed to assess the safety, immunogenicity, and initial efficacy of the malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS02D in infants in Africa. ⋯ The RTS,S/AS02D malaria vaccine was safe, well tolerated, and immunogenic in young infants. These findings set the stage for expanded phase III efficacy studies to confirm vaccine efficacy against clinical malaria disease.

Human atrial natriuretic peptide and nicorandil as adjuncts to reperfusion treatment for acute myocardial infarction (J-WIND): two randomised trials.
Patients who have acute myocardial infarction remain at major risk of cardiovascular events. We aimed to assess the effects of either human atrial natriuretic peptide or nicorandil on infarct size and cardiovascular outcome. ⋯ Patients with acute myocardial infarction who were given atrial natriuretic peptide had lower infarct size, fewer reperfusion injuries, and better outcomes than controls. We believe that atrial natriuretic peptide could be a safe and effective adjunctive treatment in patients with acute myocardial infarction who receive percutaneous coronary intervention.

Effect of an interleukin-4 variant on late phase asthmatic response to allergen challenge in asthmatic patients: results of two phase 2a studies.
Increases in T helper (Th) 2 cytokine concentrations have been seen in atopic asthma, with interleukin 4 and interleukin 13 thought to have a role in the physiological response to allergen challenge. Our aim was to assess the therapeutic effect of pitrakinra, an interleukin-4 variant that targets allergic Th2 inflammation by potently inhibiting the binding of interleukin 4 and interleukin 13 to interleukin-4Ralpha receptor complexes. ⋯ Local treatment, targeted at inhibition of interleukins 4 and 13 in the lung, could substantially diminish the symptoms of asthma.
