Comparison of the efficacy and safety of 3 treatments for patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: A network meta-analysis.
Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) constitute an age-related health problem that affects approximately 200 million people worldwide. Currently, various treatments are performed with the goal of reducing pain, stabilizing the vertebrate, and restoring mobility. In this study, we aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of vertebroplasty (VP), kyphoplasty (KP), and conservative treatment (CT) for the treatment of OVCFs. ⋯ VP might be the best option when pain relief is the principle aim of therapy, but KP was associated with the lowest risk of new fractures and might offer better outcomes in terms of daily function and quality of life.

A clinical review on megalencephaly: A large brain as a possible sign of cerebral impairment.
Megalencephaly and macrocephaly present with a head circumference measurement 2 standard deviations above the age-related mean. However, even if pathologic events resulting in both megalencephaly and macrocephaly may coexist, a distinction between these two entities is appropriate, as they represent clinical expression of different disorders with a different approach in clinical work-up, overall prognosis, and treatment. ⋯ The disorders associated with megalencephaly are classically defined into 3 groups: idiopathic or benign, metabolic, and anatomic. In this article, we seek to underline the clinical aspect of megalencephaly, emphasizing the main disorders that manifest with this anomaly in an attempt to properly categorize these disorders within the megalencephaly group.

Comparison of mid-term efficacy of spastic flatfoot in ambulant children with cerebral palsy by 2 different methods.
To compare the treatment efficacy of spastic flatfoot surgery by 2 different surgical methods: nonfusion subtalar arthroereisis using subtalar joint stabilizer (SJS) and Dennyson-Fulford subtalar arthrodesis (D-FSA). A total of 26 cases of ambulant children with cerebral palsy diagnosed as spastic flatfoot were surgically treated from January 2011 to December 2014. Preoperative and postoperative American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society-Ankle and Hindfoot (AOFAS-AH) scores, anteroposterior-talocalcaneal angles (ATAs), and lateral talar-first metatarsal angles (Meary angles) of the affected foot were recorded. ⋯ Only 1 foot had occasional pain. Postoperative ATA was decreased from preoperative 35° (20°-45°) to 16° (12°-25°); lateral X-ray films showed that the Meary angle was decreased from preoperative 19° (10°-40°) to postoperative 2° (0°-5°); the differences in both findings were statistically significant (P < .05). Both nonfusion subtalar arthroereisis using SJS and D-FSA were effective for the surgical treatment of spastic flatfoot, with similar clinical outcomes.

Effects of elastic resistance exercise on body composition and physical capacity in older women with sarcopenic obesity: A CONSORT-compliant prospective randomized controlled trial.
Sarcopenia is associated with loss of muscle mass and an increased risk of physical disability in elderly people. However, the prevalence of sarcopenia has increased in obese elderly populations. The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical efficacy of elastic resistance exercise training (RET) in patients with sarcopenic obesity. ⋯ The present data suggest that elastic resistance exercise exerted benefits on the body composition, MQ, and physical function in patients with sarcopenic obesity. Regular exercise incorporating elastic RET should be used to attenuate muscle mass loss and prevent physical difficulty in obese older adults with sarcopenia on reconditioning therapy.
