Genetic polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase as a potential risk factor for congenital heart disease: A meta-analysis in Chinese pediatric population.
A meta-analysis of polymorphism C677T (rs1801133) of the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene as a potential risk factor for congenital heart disease (CHD) in Chinese paediatric population was studied in view of the previously reported controversial results. ⋯ Our study results indicate that MTHFR gene 677T polymorphism is a genetic risk factor in the development of CHD in Chinese paediatric population.

Cost-effectiveness of neck-specific exercise with or without a behavioral approach versus physical activity prescription in the treatment of chronic whiplash-associated disorders: Analyses of a randomized clinical trial.
Fifty percent of people injured by whiplash still report neck pain after 1 year and costs associated with whiplash associated disorders (WAD) are mostly attributed to health service and sick-leave costs in chronic conditions. With increasing health care expenditures the economic impact of interventions needs to be considered. ⋯ Neck-specific exercise was cost-effective from a societal perspective in the treatment of chronic WAD compared with the other exercise interventions. ICERS varied depending on health-related quality of life questionnaires used, but the addition of a behavioral approach was not cost-effective from a societal perspective. The prescription of physical activity did not result in any QALY gain and was thus not considered a relevant option.

Comparison of preoperative imaging and pathological findings for pancreatic head adenocarcinoma: A retrospective analysis by the Association Française de Chirurgie.
Initial imaging of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is of crucial importance in the decision-making process. The aim of this study was to compare preoperative imaging, pathological data, and outcomes in a series of patients who underwent resection for pancreatic head cancer. From January 2004 to December 2009, data were collected by the Association Française de Chirurgie on 1044 patients who received first-line R0 resection of pancreatic head cancer. ⋯ Imaging of arterial invasion had no prognostic value, while histological evidence of invasion was associated with a poor prognosis. Venous and lymph node invasion, as demonstrated by imaging and by pathological analysis, had an adverse prognostic value. Imaging gives a fair positive predictive value for venous or arterial invasion; venous invasion on imaging and histology was associated with a poor prognosis; arterial invasion on imaging does not have any significant prognostic value.

Pulmonary spindle cell carcinoma with unusual morphology: A rare case report and review of the literature.
Pulmonary spindle cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a highly malignant carcinoma that often exhibits the histopathological characteristic of cell pleomorphism. ⋯ PSCC is a highly malignant carcinoma, but it rarely shows a low-grade malignant histological morphology. So, efforts should be focused on differentiating it from other borderline or low malignant tumors (such as IMT) to avoid misdiagnosis.

Surgery of the primary tumor improves survival in women with stage IV breast cancer in Southwest China: A retrospective analysis.
The International Consensus Guidelines for advanced breast cancer (ABC) considers that the surgery of the primary tumor for stage IV breast cancer patients does not usually improve the survival. However, studies have showed that resection of the primary tumor may benefit these patients. The correlation between surgery and survival remains unclear. ⋯ Additional independent prognostic factors were hormonal therapy (HR, 0.490; 95% CI 0.300-0.800) and radiotherapy (HR, 0.490; 95% CI 0.293-0.819). In addition, a favorable impact of surgery was observed by subgroup analysis. Our study showed that surgery of the primary breast tumor has a positive impact on OS in with stage IV breast cancer patients.
