Exostosin-1 (EXT1) has been demonstrated to participate in the progression of many cancers. However, it has not been previously described in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without vascular invasion. In this study, we got the accurate data of EXT1 mRNA Z-score from the CBio data portal of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), which was used to express the level of EXT1 gene expression. ⋯ There was a significant positive correlation between EXT1 copy number and upregulated EXT1 gene (P < .0001). In conclusion, upregulation of EXT1 could be an important indicator to the short DFS of HCC patients without vascular invasion. EXT1 gene copy number amplification is one of the mechanisms underlying the upregulation of EXT1.

Treatment variation related to comorbidity and complications in type 2 diabetes: A real world analysis.
A complex comorbidity status may cause treatment variance interfering with type 2 diabetes (T2D) guideline-confirm therapy and influence the occurrence of complications but evidence on its relationships and alternative treatments are lacking. This study aimed to identify treatment variance and common T2D drug treatment related to comorbid status and the association with comorbidity and complications. Based on Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) databases, we conducted a retrospective, observational exploratory study including 7123 T2D patients without microvascular-, macrovascular complication. ⋯ Occurrence of microvascular- or/and macrovascular complication and its relation to comorbidity and treatment pattern was not identified. In conclusion, as number of comorbidity increased with both type of comorbidity (diabetes related-, unrelated) present, common treatment patterns were less or not identified. More treatment variance was observed in patient's groups that had developed complications.

This study aimed to study the differences in Raman spectra of red blood cells (RBCs) among patients with β-thalassemia and controls using laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) system. A total of 33 patients with β-thalassemia major, 49 with β-thalassemia minor, and 65 controls were studied. Raman spectra of RBCs for each sample were recorded. ⋯ After normalization, the spectra of two different genotypes with β/β mutations mainly overlapped, while those with β/β mutations had lower intensity at bands 1546, 1603, and 1619 cm. The present study provided Raman characteristics of RBCs in patients with β-thalassemia major and supported the use of LTRS as a method for screening β-thalassemia major. The recognition rate for β-thalassemia minor needs to be further improved.
