The preservation and application of the submandibular gland in oral squamous cell carcinoma (STROBE).
This prospective study aimed to investigate metastases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) to cervical lymph nodes and submandibular glands and to analyze the safety and feasibility of preserving and using submandibular glandular flaps to repair postoperative OSCC defects. Overall, 330 patients with OSCC who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study from January 2014 to July 2018. OSCC metastasis to cervical lymph nodes and submandibular glands was investigated using intraoperative frozen section and postoperative pathological observation. ⋯ Direct invasion is the main form of OSCC metastasis to the submandibular gland, while hematogenous and nodal metastases are uncommon. Preservation of the submandibular gland is oncologically safe. Thus, repair of postoperative OSCC defects with submandibular gland flaps is a feasible and promising procedure.

To describe how patient characteristics influence physician decision-making about glycemic goals for Type 2 diabetes.2016 survey of 357 US physicians. The survey included two vignettes, representing a healthy patient and an unhealthy patient, adapted from a past survey of international experts and a factorial design vignette that varied age, heart disease history, and hypoglycemia history. Survey results were weighted to provide national estimates. ⋯ In the factorial vignette, physicians varied HbA1c goals by 0.35%, 0.06%, and 0.28% based on age, heart disease history, and hypoglycemia risk, respectively. The goal HbA1c range between the 55-year-old with no heart disease or hypoglycemic events and the 75-year-old with heart disease and hypoglycemic events was 0.65%. Despite guidelines that recommend HbA1c goals ranging from <6.5% to <8.5%, US physicians seem to be anchored on HbA1c goals around <7.0%.

The aim of the present study was to examine the association between vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) rs11941492 C/T polymorphism and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk in an eastern Chinese Han population. We examined VEGFR2 rs11941492 C/T polymorphism in 615 RA patients and 839 controls in an East Chinese Han population. The power analysis was used for evaluating the reliability of the results. ⋯ However, our results were obtained from only a moderate-sized sample. Studies with larger sample sizes in other ethnic populations are needed to confirm these results. The VEGFR2 rs11941492 genotype is associated with decreased susceptibility to RA.

This study aims to assess the relationship between Rab1A expression and clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of patients with human solid cancer by summarizing the studies included. ⋯ This study revealed Rab1A expression links closely with tumor size, differentiation, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and poor prognosis of human solid cancer patients. It may act as a biomarker of prognosis and a novel therapeutic target in solid cancer.

Risk factors for restless legs syndrome in hemodialysis patients in Taiwan: A case-control study.
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) increases the risks of cardiovascular disease and death in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Previous studies of risk factors for RLS in HD patients have yielded varying results. We attempted to identify risk factors for RLS in HD patients in Taiwan. ⋯ A dialysis duration of longer than 5 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.32; 95% CI = 1.23-4.39; P = .002) and a low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level (<40 mg/dL in men; <50 mg/dL in women) (OR = 2.73; 95% CI = 1.44-5.15; P = .009) were associated with increased risk of RLS. Among the 59 patients with RLS, 48 (81.3%) had moderate or severe symptoms (IRLSSG Severity Scale >10), and RLS severity was significantly correlated with dialysis duration (r = .26; P = .043). Among HD patients, RLS was more common among those receiving dialysis for longer than 5 years and those with a low serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level.
