Mediating effect of social support on the association between life events and depression: A cross-sectional study of adolescents in Chongqing China.
Depression is one of the most common mental health problems in adolescents. The link between negative life events and depression has been well established. However, our understanding about the role of social support in the link, which is likely culture-dependent, is quite limited. ⋯ Both frequency and perceived importance of social support showed a mediating effect on the association between life events and depression. Social support has a mediating effect on the association between life events and depression. Strengthening social support may be considered as an effective interventional strategy on depression in adolescents.

The typical manifestations of patients with a trisomy 21 syndrome are mental retardation and anatomical deformities of face and neck. In the available literature, all case reports regarding anesthetic management of mentally retarded patients have focused on elective surgeries. There is no report regarding anesthetic management of mentally retarded patients undergoing emergency surgery. ⋯ When general anesthesia and emergency airway management are required in the patients with mental retardation and predicted difficult airways, a combination of the supraglottic airway and the flexible bronchoscope maybe a safe and useful choice for airway control.

This study identified the effects of pursed-lip breathing (PLB), forward trunk lean posture (FTLP), and combined PLB and FTLP on total and compartmental lung volumes, and ventilation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Sixteen patients with mild to moderate COPD performed 2 breathing patterns of quiet breathing (QB) and PLB during FTLP and upright posture (UP). The total and compartmental lung volumes and ventilation of these 4 tasks (QB-UP, PLB-UP, QB-FTLP, PLB-FTLP) were evaluated using optoelectronic plethysmography. ⋯ PLB significantly and positively changed end-expiratory lung volume of abdominal compartment (EELVAB ) end-expiratory lung volume, EILVAB, tidal volume of pulmonary ribcage, tidal volume of abdomen, and ventilation than QB (P < .05). UP significantly increased tidal volume of pulmonary ribcage, tidal volume of abdomen, and ventilation and decreased EELVAB, end-expiratory lung volume, and EILVAB than FTLP (P < .05). In conclusion, combined PLB with UP or FTLP demonstrates a positive change in total and compartmental lung volumes in patients with mild to moderate COPD.

Correlations between the properties of saliva and metabolic syndrome: A prospective observational study.
Saliva tests, which are easy to perform and non-invasive, can be used to monitor both oral disease (especially periodontal disease) and physical conditions, including metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, in the present study the associations between saliva test results and MetS were investigated based on medical health check-up data for a large population. In total, 1,888 and 2,296 individuals underwent medical check-ups for MetS and simultaneous saliva tests in 2017 and 2018, respectively. ⋯ Significant relationships were detected between salivary protein levels and serum HbA1c levels or blood pressure levels and between the buffer capacity of saliva and serum triglyceride levels. In addition, salivary pH was increased irreversibly by impaired renal function. This study suggested that saliva tests conducted during health check-ups of large populations might be a useful screening tool for periodontal disease and MetS/MetS components.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a crucial role in the immune response to many malignancies, but the signaling pathways by which the glioma microenvironment cross-talk with TAMs are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to uncover the potential signaling pathways of the regulation of TAMs and identify candidate targets for therapeutic intervention of glioma through bioinformatics analysis. Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets were used to download RNA-Seq data and microarray data of human glioma specimen. ⋯ TAMs can be used as a good prognostic indicator in glioma patients. By analyzing comprehensive bioinformatics data, we uncovered the underlying signaling pathway of the DEGs between glioma patients with high and low expression level of CD68. Furthermore, the 6 hub genes identified were closely associated with TAMs in glioma microenvironment and need further investigation.
